Royal Caribbean delays Dynamic Dining roll-out

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas
When Quantum of the Seas was launched late last year so to was Royal Caribbean’s concept of Dynamic Dining. Royal Caribbean replaced the main central dining room with a multitude of individual restaurants, comprising of a mix of complimentary and fee-charging restaurants. The intention was to create a more flexible dining set-up for guests where they could choose where to dine, when to dine and with whom on a day-by-day basis rather than being restricted to set times (early or late seating).

During her spell in dry dock last year the main dining room on-board Oasis of the Seas was redeveloped into the style of separate venues. It was intended that traditional main dining room system would be offered until March 2015 at which point Dynamic Dining would then replace it.

Recently, however, Royal Caribbean International confirmed that they are delaying the rollout to their Oasis-class ships until “late 2015”. Reports suggest this delay is to gather more guest feedback prior to help ensure a successful launch of the concept onto an older vessel for the first time.

A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean UK stated “Dynamic Dining is a strategic initiative for Royal Caribbean and based on the positive response from our guests, it is our intention to implement this program across as many of our ships as possible, as part of our Royal Advantage program — our ongoing commitment to offer the best experience in the industry to our guests."

This delay appears to only affect the retrospective rolling out of Dynamic Dining. It will not affect Anthem of the Seas which will launch with Dynamic Dining facilities in place in April. Allure of the Seas is expected to receive the same main dining room changes as sister ship Oasis of the Seas received when she goes into dry dock in May with the switch to Dynamic Dining following later in the year.

Take a look at what's new on board Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas

Oasis of the Seas

Cruise ship Oasis of the Seas arrives in Southampton after its 14-day dry-dock with a new look including revitalised dining, high-speed internet, new shops, and the musical Cats in its theatre.
Sister ship Allure of the Seas will follow suit next May with almost identical enhancements.
One of the most exciting features, according to executive vice-president Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, is Dynamic Dining, which has been created by turning the ship’s three-deck main dining room into three distinct restaurants.
The American Icon Grill will offer a take on the classic American road trip, pulling together best-loved regional favourites into a comfort-style menu. Silk is a vibrant and exotic destination where the spices of the Far East bring new flavour to adventurous palates through a Pan-Asian menu. The Grande, where every night is formal night, offers an elegant ambiance and refined French cuisine.
However, passengers will have to wait until next March before the menu changes are brought into effect.
The three complimentary venues are among 20 eating places on Oasis. The others include:
Izumi Hibachi & Sushi, a revitalised Izumi Japanese Cuisine offering a full teppanyaki menu as well as sushi rolls and sashimi. Sabor Taqueria & Tequila Bar, first introduced onboard Navigator of the Seas to rave reviews, will feature a authentic Mexican dishes including hand-made tableside guacamole and freshly-mixed Margaritas. Wonderland Imaginative Cuisine, a unique culinary adventure for the senses where Royal Caribbean International chefs twist their culinary kaleidoscopes in a whimsical setting that challenges the imagination with never-before-seen fare. Coastal Kitchen is an exclusive restaurant for suite guests, fusing Mediterranean and Californian influences. Guests will continue to enjoy Giovanni’s Table, 150 Central Park and Vintages wine bar, the successful speciality dining concepts introduced on the Oasis class in 2009.
Royal Caribbean International’s game-changing partnership with technology partner O3b provides guests on Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas with internet connectivity that matches fast broadband connections onshore and is greater than all other cruise ships in the world combined. Royal iQ is a new app that puts guests in charge of their holiday choices, confirming dining reservations, shore excursions and spa appointments onboard through a downloadable app and at freestanding iQ stations around the ship.
The changes to Oasis include 10 new suites on Oasis-class ships, some with ocean views and others looking across or the AquaTheater and Boardwalk neighbourhood. Two Royal Family Suites can accommodate up to six guests.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-running musical Cats makes its debut at sea on Oasis – replacing Hairspray – while Mamma Mia! will take over from Chicago on Allure from next June.

Barcelona Bags A Biggie!

Royal Caribbean is bringing its mega-ship cruising to the Mediterranean for a full season for the first time in 2015 when the 220,000-ton Allure of the Seas will sail a series of cruises from the Spanish port of Barcelona.

After carrying more than two million passengers to date in the Caribbean, Allure will return to Europe - from where it was delivered by STX Finland in late 2010 - to operate for five months next year.

The impressive vessel will arrive in Barcelona in May and sail from the port until October.  Royal Caribbean's mega-ship deployment follows the announcement of a short Mediterranean season for Oasis of the Seas this autumn.

Allure's seven-night cruises will visit Palma de Mallorca, Marseilles (for Provence), La Spezia (for Florence and Pisa), Civitavecchia (for Rome) and Naples. Passengers will also have the option to join the ship in Civitavecchia for a week-long cruise starting and ending in the Italian port.

Royal Caribbean’s Crown & Anchor Society loyalty programme members also have the opportunity to book for this rare European season starting on Wednesday (Feb 12), one week before general bookings open on February 18.

In addition, the line's Rhapsody of the Seas will offer three 10 and 11-night Black Sea itineraries from Istanbul, then sail a variety of 7 to 11-night Greece and Turkey itineraries from Civitavecchia while Splendour of the Seas will offer seven-night Greek Isles and Turkey cruises from Venice.

Allure has sailed year-round from Port Everglades since entering service as well as sister ship Oasis of the Seas, which debuted in 2009. This year's Mediterranean season for Oasis in September consists of several cruises round-trip Barcelona and one from Barcelona to Rotterdam, where the ship will enter dry-dock for routine maintenance. It then returns to Port Everglades in October.

In fact, 19-year-old Tom - the Olympic high diver and star of ITV daredevil show Splash - was actually taking part in the "Caribbean Cup Challenge," an imaginative new programme designed to promote the cruise line’s latest sailings.

Daley, Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe and American gymnast Gabby Douglas all competed in a variety of athletic challenges, including surfing (above), rock-climbing and dodgeball on board the line's mega-ship Allure of the Seas.

And, of course, they are all activities guests can enjoy on the 220,000-ton ship as part of the amazing variety of sporting amenities on offer, notably the FloRider surf pool and the amazing Zipline ride. Wine tasting excellence from $29 per person

Royal Caribbean International is launching a series of beverage programmes to on-board wine aficionados through an exclusive new partnership with renowned French winemaker Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). The programme debuted in December aboard Allure of the Seas, and will be deployed fleet-wide by the end of March. The hour-long Lafite Wine Experience features a tasting of four wines from the winemaker’s Reserve Speciale series and is available to guests from just $29 per person.

Guests will sample four Reserve Speciale wines, beginning with Reserve Speciale Bordeaux Blanc and Rouge, progressing to Reserve Speciale Medoc, and finally culminating in Reserve Speciale Pauillac. Led by a Royal Caribbean International Cellar Master, the Lafite Wine Experience aims to expand guests’ understanding of several of the growing regions in Bordeaux and how its soil cultivates the grapes and elevates the wines’ bouquet. The World's Largest - Together!

We have just been on board Royal Caribbean's stunning new Allure of the Seas (the 'world's largest cruise ship,' being 5cm longer than sister vessel Oasis, last year's BIG cruise news), and the highlight (among very many) was a rare sea rendezvous of the two leviathans of the seas outside Port Everglades last night.

Captain Hernan Zini of the Allure positioned his ship - on a two-day travel trade preview cruise - a few miles out to sea off the south Florida port for Fort Lauderdale and waited for the line's other big ship, which was on her way out on her regular Saturday sailing to the Caribbean.

The two unmistakeable vessels then met up at almost 6.30pm as darkness fell, and each launched a small boat to offer a special commemorative gift to each other.

Passengers thronged the rails on both ships and lightbulbs flashed madly as most people tried to snap a memorable photo of the event. Finally, after nearly an hour in close proximity, the two ships went their separate ways.

It may also be a long time before they meet up again as the Allure will begin her regular 7-day Sunday cruises on December 1, so the two colossi will only cross paths as they go hither and thither on either eastern or western Caribbean routes in future.

We will have a LOT more to say about Allure - both here on Time Spent at Sea and in the Winter edition of World of Cruising magazine - in the near future, but suffice it to say for now she is easily an equal technological marvel to her sister but the addition of new entertainment options really marks her out as THE cruise ship to see in 2010/11.

Royal Caribbean's Big 5-Ship Refurb

London, 9 November 2010 – Royal Caribbean International has announced the revitalisation of five ships in its fleet; Radiance of the Seas, Splendour of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas and Freedom of the Seas will all undertake various updates during 2011.

“The planned enhancements of five ships in 2011 will help expand some of the most successful programmes that we have launched on our incredible Oasis-class ships to deliver these new ‘wows’ to more ships in our fleet,” said Betsy O’Rourke, senior vice president of Marketing, Royal Caribbean International. “We are proud to continue to deliver more to see, do, and love than ever before to our guests.”

In mid-2011, Radiance will begin its revitalisation with the addition of new speciality restaurants, including the Samba Grill Brazilian Steakhouse, Mexican-themed Rita’s Cantina, and the Italian Giovanni’s Table, as well as the Park Café deli-style restaurant and the exclusive Chef’s Table dining experience. Other enhancements to the ship will include a new Diamond Lounge for Crown & Anchor Society loyalty programme members, as well as the Royal Babies and Tots Nursery, interactive flat-panel televisions in all staterooms, and Wi-Fi throughout the ship.

Splendour will receive two new speciality restaurants, and the Park Café, the Royal Babies and Tots Nursery, a Diamond and Concierge Lounge, flat-panel televisions, and Wi-Fi throughout the ship. In addition, there will be new balcony staterooms added, select stateroom enhancements and upgrades to public areas, including a refreshed Windjammer Marketplace.

Oasis of the Seas will also launch new onboard guest programmes starting in the first quarter of 2011. Guests will be able to enjoy the DreamWorks Experience and 3-D films in the main Opal Theater. Also, a Starbucks coffee shop will replace Mondo Café on the Royal Promenade. This follows the first-ever Starbucks at sea which will launch onboard Allure of the Seas when the sister ship enters service on 1 December 2010.

In early 2011, Freedom (above) and Liberty of the Seas will introduce new dining, entertainment, children’s programming and other enhancements made popular on the Oasis-class ships. This will include the Royal Babies and Tots Nursery, The Cupcake Cupboard, the groundbreaking Wayfinding navigation system for guests, and an oversized outdoor video screen in each ship’s main pool area. In addition, the DreamWorks experience, 3-D movies and complimentary guest service kiosks, which will be introduced on Allure, also will be implemented onboard Freedom and Liberty, as well as sister-ship Oasis of the Seas. Saturday Night Fever: The Musical, Royal Caribbean’s third licensed main-stage musical production, will debut on Liberty in the main Platinum Theater.

Allure of the Seas and Twin Funnels

By guest blogger Steve Newman

With its twin funnels lowered for the first time, new cruise ship Allure of the Seas has passed under the Storebaelt Bridge with a tiny amount of breathing space. The 18km-long Storebaelt Bridge stretches between the Danish islands of Zealand and Flynn and towers to a height of 254 metres (833ft) with the road it carries at 65 metres (213ft) above the sea.

Allure of the Seas also stands at 65m at its highest point – the twin funnel stacks. The architects from Royal Caribbean behind the design of the new ship developed funnels that retract inside the stack to reduce its height by one metre, thus allowing the vessel to pass under the bridge. The tight manoeuvre took place as Allure made its way to its new permanent home, Fort Lauderdale in Florida via the North Sea, Dover Straits and English Channel having left the STX shipyard in Turku, Finland, on October 29.

The first paying guests will join Allure on December 1 when the ship begins offering cruises in the Caribbean for the first time. Prices for a nine-night fly/cruise, including flights from the UK for a seven-night voyage, start from £1,470 per person.

At 225,282 gross registered tonnes, Allure can accommodate over 6,200 guests and is 360 meters and 5mm long (1,187ft). If stood upright, bow to stern, the ship would dwarf the One Canada Square building at London’s Canary Wharf and New York’s Chrysler building.

Featuring huge outdoor spaces, highlights include an open air park – Central Park – longer than a football pitch, a two-level shopping street, 17 different bars, over 20 restaurants and cafes, two rock climbing walls, two FlowRider surf simulators, a zip-line ride and even a large outdoor AquaTheater for high diver performances and water shows.

Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas (above) is proudly claiming the title of the world’s largest cruise ship (from sister ship Oasis) when she launches in December. Don’t miss out on the chance to sail on board this record-breaker next summer on a nine-night Eastern Caribbean fly/cruise from £2,048 per adult and £1,685 per child (based on two adults and two children sharing an inside cabin).

Allure's onboard highlights include Central Park, an open air park area with real trees; a zip-line which is suspended nine decks high; and the Rising Tide Bar, which moves between three decks. The ship has more than 20 restaurants and cafes and 25 different shops. She will also feature the award-winning West End and Broadway musical Chicago in the 1,380-seat theatre, as well as shows, interactive activities, parades and even meals with some of DreamWorks Animation’s best loved characters, including Madagascar’s Alex; Mort and Po from Kung-Fu Panda; and Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon.

Price includes return flights from London Heathrow, one-night pre-cruise hotel accommodation, transfers and a seven-night cruise departing Fort Lauderdale (Florida) and calling at Nassau (Bahamas), Charlotte Amalie (St. Thomas) and Philipsburg (St. Maarten), before returning to Fort Lauderdale; meals and entertainment onboard and all relevant cruise taxes/fees.

Alluring All New Restaurants

By guest blogger Steve Newman

Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas (at her floatout, above), the world’s next largest and most innovative cruise ship debuting in December this year, will introduce new culinary concepts and twists to the signature Oasis-class restaurants.

A Brazilian steakhouse will be a destination restaurant that opens for dinner service in the Solarium, featuring authentic Brazilian-style meats and seafood dishes, served table-side and sliced straight off the skewer. In Central Park, recently appointed Chef de Cuisine Molly Brandt will present guests with distinct dining experience at Allure of the Seas’ 150 Central Park, a signature fine dining experience.

Combining the best of classic Mexican beach bars and Southern California’s famed taquerias, Rita’s Cantina will be a vibrant new restaurant in the Boardwalk neighbourhood. Adults and kids alike will enjoy some of their favourite Mexican fare. The more casual setting is likely to be a favourite lunch, snack or dinner spot. Rita’s Cantina will also boast some of the best and widest selection of margaritas at sea. In addition, the restaurant will introduce new nightlife to Boardwalk with live guitar music, drinks and dancing.

Rita’s Cantina will be located in place of Seafood Shack onboard sister-ship Oasis. Also new to Boardwalk will be The Boardwalk Dog House, an outdoor hot-dog counter located where The Donut Shop is on Oasis of the Seas. The Donut Shop will remain on Boardwalk in a new location next to the Ice Cream Parlour.

In addition to their year-round Caribbean programme, the line also offers unique cruise-tour land packages in Alaska, Canada, Dubai, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Ready, Shrek, Go!

Once upon a time, there was a little cruise line. And the little cruise line had a Big Red Boat. And on the Big Red Boat were Disney characters. And all the little children on the Big Red Boat were happy.

Then Disney started its own Cruise Line and all their characters jumped ship, leaving the Big Red Boat to struggle along with Loony Tune characters....

But, in the big wide world of cruise ship marketing, a major trend had been started, and everyone took notice. While Disney Cruise Line officially set sail in 1998, 'Fun Ship Freddy' joined Carnival Cruises in 2002 and a trend had become a major onboard entertainment feature.

Then, earlier this year, NCL announced a major tie-up with Nickelodeon to use their characters aboard the forthcoming Norwegian Epic. And now comes another move in this direction as Royal Caribbean staged a major press conference yesterday to unveil a marketing alliance with DreamWorks Animation.

The details - which add the likes of Shrek and Donkey; Kung Fu Panda; the characters from the Madagascar series (notably the hysterically funny penguins); and an Ice Show based on the recent film 'How To Train Your Dragon' - reveal that Royal Caribbean believe they need to not only acknowledge this trend but take it to a whole new level.

To that end, the new Allure of the Seas - due to sail this December - will be the line's trailblazer for this new tie-up between one of the world's biggest cruise lines and one of the most successful animated film studios.

The alliance will see a whole raft of new children's programming and activities (naturally enough) for a cruise line that already boasts a fantastic option for families with their Adventure Ocean kids areas (for 3 to 11-year-olds), but DreamWorks boss Jeffrey Katzenberg made it clear they really wanted to push the possibilities with this deal, and that has led to some interesting additions to Allure's onboard entertainment quotient.

As well as the themed Ice Show, there will be DreamWorks characters added to the AquaTheater show in the ship's signature after show area; there will be a new 3-D film capapbility in the main theatre, so passengers can see the latest movies in 3-D as well as past DreamWorks favourites.

Add in character breakfasts, parades, special events and other photo opportunities (weith the DreamWorks options also being added to Oasis, Freedom and Liberty of the Seas after Allure) and you have an amazing new package - and a whole new style - of cruising from Royal Caribbean, and just one more reason to consider taking a holiday with them next year.

Whether you have kids or not!

Great choice for 2010

We're accustomed to a wonderful variety of new ships to look forward to each year, but 2010 promises to deliver an absolutely bumper crop of newbuilds, as much for their variety as anything else.

From the 150,000-ton Norwegian Epic (above, with its Aqua Park) and the 220,000-ton Allure of the Seas (sister to the recent Oasis), to the boutique little Independence of American Cruise Lines (3,000 tons) and the chic Le Boreal of Compagnie du Ponant (10,600 tons), this is a line-up that truly offers something for everyone.

The year starts with the latest vessel for Costa Cruises, the Costa Deliziosa, a sister to the Luminosa and the second in this intermediate class of ship for the Italian-based line. MSC Cruises then add the MSC Magnifica, the fourth in their Musica-class vessel, and their 10th ship in all. Quite an upgrade on their traditional, three-ship fleet of just nine years ago!

Celebrity follow up with Celebrity Eclipse in April, the third in their growing and impressive Solstice-class, and, in the same month, P&O Cruises add their biggest ship to date, the 116,000-ton Azura.

May should be a big month for small-ship lovers, with the arrival of the Independence to boost their unique style of American river and coastal cruising. This will be the third vessel of this style and it is obviously proving a big successful with those who enjoy their cruising small-scale.

Le Boreal is the other attractive smaller option, with a truly sumptuous new look for this chic French line. Well worth considering in 2010.

The pace doesn't slow down in June, though, as we welcome the huge Epic of NCL (their biggest-ever ship) and the Seabourn Sojourn of the Yachts of Seabourn, who made a huge splash (ho, ho!) in 2009 with their Odyssey, a ship hailed as a real 'game-changer' in the deluxe end of the cruise market.

Holland America join the newbuild party in July with their Nieuw Amsterdam, an old name for their latest and possibly their smartest (and the fourth ship actually to bear that name) to date. A sister to the Eurodam, this will be the 81st vessel to enter HAL service. Quite a run!

The autumn sees the arrival of Allure of the Seas, and the second of the mind-boggling Project Genesis series of Royal Caribbean. Our World of Cruising magazine hailed Oasis as 'the world's first space ship' recently, as a tribute to both the space-age look and huge amount of space involved in this vessel, and Allure should provide more of the same. Or, as I said last month - It's a cruise ship, Jim, but not as we know it!

One ship which I will be eagerly awaiting is the new Marina of Oceania Cruises in October, with this smart, upmarket line promising to deliver a mid-range ship full of innovation and style and providing a real challenge to the ultra-deluxe lines but with a slightly lower price tag. Definitely one to watch.

Finally, venerable Cunard will debut their latest offering the new Queen Elizabeth toward the end of the year, a 92,000-ton vessel that will maintain the line's great tradition but build on the modern styling that the Queen Victoria showed us last year, or 'the gracious new Cunarder,' as they like to say.

So, if that little lot isn't enough to get everyone excited about the possibilities for cruising in 2010, I don't know what will.

Merry Christmas everyone, and a happy Cruise New Year!
