Wilderness Camp with campfires and Huskies

By guest blogger Steve Newman

Fancy experiencing the Arctic wilderness – Norwegian style? Want to try reindeer sledging, snowmobiling or dog sledging deep inside the Arctic interior with nothing but campfires and hopefully the Northern Lights as company? From today, anyone travelling north with Hurtigruten has the option to book a new ‘Camp Tamok’ excursion and, with reliable snow from mid-November, it’s a must for any would-be Arctic adventurer.

Camp Tamok enjoys a stunning location near Høiseth in Finndalen, an offshoot of the Tamokdalen Valley. Made up of Sami tents and log cabins, the camp is the perfect base for adventures in the winter wilderness. There is no water or electricity – this is an authentic camp with an emphasis on activities. The main attractions are dog sledging, reindeer sleigh rides and snowmobile driving, but the increased chance of seeing the Northern Lights (the camp is located miles from artificial light underneath a pitch black sky) and the hot local food served around a warming campfire will make this trip into the wilderness a must for many.

The excursion can be booked when travelling northbound and departs from the port of Finnsnes. A guided bus journey of around 90 minutes will take guests to the camp, where the next four hours are spent experiencing all that Tamok has to offer before re-joining the ship in Tromsø.

This experience is booked on board and costs 2,250 Norwegian Kroner (approx £235) – guests can book one of two options, either Reindeer driving and dog sledging or Snowmobile safari and reindeer driving.

A 6-night Voyage North costs from £1,080 per person (December voyages) including return flights, six nights half board on the ship, transfers and taxes. No single supplements apply.

Voluntourism with Crystal Cruises

Ultra-luxury Crystal Cruises has announced a new corporate social responsibility initiative for 2011 to support the destinations it visits.

The ‘You Care, We Care’ programme is a complimentary, hands-on, shore excursion initiative that opens up opportunities for guests and crew alike to assist with charitable projects in destinations they visit during any cruise. The focus lies in working with and assisting local projects, educating participants on local community needs and providing them with authentic, rewarding experiences and an overall sense of place.

On every 2011 itinerary, Crystal Cruises has planned one ‘You Care, We Care’ Crystal Adventure in which a limited number of guests and crew can donate their time, with Crystal covering all logistical arrangements and costs.

The complete programme of excursions and projects is currently in development and availability will be limited but 'voluntourism' experiences aboard Crystal Symphony (above) and Crystal Serenity voyages will include:

§ Lima, Peru – Brightening the environment of the children at the ANQUIEM Burn rehabilitation centre with arts and crafts

§ Cartagena, Colombia – Creating crafts with the elderly, playing football with the children, or urban farming with an emphasis on organic agriculture at the Granitos de Paz Foundation

§ Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Assisting the PEACE organisation in beach and neighborhood clean-up.

Commenting on the new initiative, Crystal's Vice President International, Philip Ordever said: “We challenged our worldwide tour operators to craft excursions that contribute to local causes because we are absolutely committed to giving something back to the communities we visit and explore. We also recognise the growing desire of our guests to seek out and discover authentic, enriching experiences and believe this new initiative will make a difference to both our destinations and our overall guest experience.”

A cornerstone of Crystal's culture is its genuine hospitality and service that has been internationally celebrated for two decades. This spirit of generosity extends to its respectful treatment of the environment, oceans and communities in which it travels.

Even More From MSC Yacht Club

Last year, MSC Cruises took the market by storm with the launch of MSC Yacht Club, an innovative high-end offering located on the foredecks of designer flagships MSC Fantasia and Splendida. Far from resting on its laurels however, the family-owned Italian company has announced a comprehensive array of new features will make the Yacht Club experience even more outstanding.

First and foremost, a number of changes on board have made the Yacht Club an entirely self-contained private area of deluxe suites, all enjoying direct lift access to its private facilities and to the Aurea Spa, where dedicated treatment rooms are provided for Yacht Club guests.

Meanwhile, the already sophisticated gourmet dining experience has been transformed by making the most prestigious restaurant on board each flagship - L'Etoile on Fantasia and L'Olivo on Splendida (above) - exclusively for Yacht Club guests. Located in a panoramic position on the same deck as the dedicated reception area, guests enjoy an open sitting service, so they can dine in their private restaurant at any hour desired.

Typical of MSC attention to detail are the several new and personal touches accompanying these substantial additions, including a bottle of premium Prosecco and a bowl of fresh fruit in each cabin together with a series of “sweet surprises” throughout the voyage. Yacht Club members are also invited to attend an exclusive cocktail party once the ship has sailed. Guests will, of course, continue to enjoy priority check-in, embarkation and disembarkation, as well as free drinks from their in-suite mini-bars and in the Yacht Club facilities.

MSC Yacht Club is an exclusive ship-within-a-ship; currently located on Fantasia and Splendida, it will be replicated on a third ship, MSC Divina, currently under construction and set to launch in 2012.

Here, served by its own Concierge Reception, is a private world of luxurious facilities, including superior suites complete with wood panelling, marble whirlpool bathrooms and widescreen TVs with Nintendo Wii consoles; a bespoke pool and solarium complex; Top Sail panoramic private lounge serving gourmet snacks and drinks all day and private lift access.

Adding special distinction, the Yacht Club also offers a classic butler service, available 24 hours a day.

Wildlife Sculptor in Antarctica

By guest blogger Steve Newman

Top British wildlife sculptor Hamish Mackie will be traveliling to Antarctica with One Ocean Expeditions on a spectacular 18-night/19-day trip via the Falkland Islands and South Georgia on the Russian ice-strengthened ship Marina Svetaeva on February 16. Taking his own materials, including his modelling tools and a particular clay able to withstand the cold, he will be working directly from life, capturing penguins, albatross and elephant seals.

These works of art will then be brought back to the UK in special containers to be cast into bronze for his one-man exhibition in New York later in the year. Hamish, 36, will also be giving talks on his work on board and, uniquely, offering workshops where passengers, both professional and amateur, will have the opportunity to make their own sculptures.

“The way I handle clay draws you into the anatomy of the subject and leaves a history as to how the sculpture was made,” says Mackie, who is looking forward to sculpting the unique wildlife of the seventh continent.

The price for the 18-night voyage starts at $13,490 per person sharing a twin cabin, including accommodation, food and excursions during the voyage. Flights to/from Ushuaia, Argentina, where passengers embark the Marina Svetaeva are not included. There is no additional charge for the sculpting workshops with Hamish Mackie.

The World's Largest - Together!

We have just been on board Royal Caribbean's stunning new Allure of the Seas (the 'world's largest cruise ship,' being 5cm longer than sister vessel Oasis, last year's BIG cruise news), and the highlight (among very many) was a rare sea rendezvous of the two leviathans of the seas outside Port Everglades last night.

Captain Hernan Zini of the Allure positioned his ship - on a two-day travel trade preview cruise - a few miles out to sea off the south Florida port for Fort Lauderdale and waited for the line's other big ship, which was on her way out on her regular Saturday sailing to the Caribbean.

The two unmistakeable vessels then met up at almost 6.30pm as darkness fell, and each launched a small boat to offer a special commemorative gift to each other.

Passengers thronged the rails on both ships and lightbulbs flashed madly as most people tried to snap a memorable photo of the event. Finally, after nearly an hour in close proximity, the two ships went their separate ways.

It may also be a long time before they meet up again as the Allure will begin her regular 7-day Sunday cruises on December 1, so the two colossi will only cross paths as they go hither and thither on either eastern or western Caribbean routes in future.

We will have a LOT more to say about Allure - both here on Time Spent at Sea and in the Winter edition of World of Cruising magazine - in the near future, but suffice it to say for now she is easily an equal technological marvel to her sister but the addition of new entertainment options really marks her out as THE cruise ship to see in 2010/11.

Sri Lanka First Time Visit

By guest blogger Steve Newman

In 2011, Zegrahm Expeditions will visit the country of Sri Lanka for the first time in its 20-year history. Famous for the production and export of tea, coffee, coconuts, rubber and cinnamon, Sri Lanka has long been on the path of major sea routes and today is an emerging adventure travel destination.

Graced by lush tropical forests, white-sand beaches, and rich biodiversity, it’s no wonder it was once lauded by Marco Polo as the “finest island of its size.” In addition to Sri Lanka’s unspoiled natural beauty, the country has a fascinating cultural history over 3,000-years old, which is also one of the longest documented histories in the world, and is one of the few remaining centres of the Buddhist religion and culture in South Asia.

The Bay of Bengal & the Andaman Sea (Jan17-Feb 6, 2011) and India and the Maldives with Sri Lanka & Lakshadweeps (Dec 17, 2011-Jan 3, 2012) voyages explore three World Heritage Sites during the two days spent in Sri Lanka.

Visits include 1,000-year-old Polonnaruwa (and nearby Minneriya-Giritale National Park, which is home to bears, crocodiles, leopards and its most famed resident, wild elephants!); the Golden Temple of Dambulla, which is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka; and the Temple of the Tooth, which houses the tooth of Bhudda encased in gold caskets. These expeditions both overnight in the quaint village of Habarna.

Travellers aboard Splendors of India with Sri Lanka (Feb 1-17, 2011) and Southern India by Sea with Sri Lanka (Dec 7-21, 2011) enjoy a full-day exploration of Galle, including its Dutch colonial era fort—a World Heritage Site—Wickramasinghe Folk Art Museum and Poorvarama Temple.

Travellers spend a second day in the Sri Lankan highlands visiting the Temple of the Tooth, one of the holiest places of worship and pilgrimage for Buddhists around the world; Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, which provides care and protection to the many orphaned elephants found in the jungle (above); and the Botanical Gardens. On the Splendors of India voyage, travellers get the added benefit of an overnight in Kandy, the laid-back capital of Sri Lanka’s Hill Country.

Louis Cruises in 2011 From Under £42 per night

Louis Cruises’ full 2011 brochure, featuring cruises costing less than £42 per person per night, has gone on-sale.

A three-night Greek Islands cruise out of Piraeus (Athens) on the Aquamarine or Orient Queen starts from £179 in 2011, while a 12-night cruise out of Genoa or Marseille on the Louis Majesty leads in at £499 per person – just £41.58 per person, per night.

“Such outstanding value for a full-board cruise offers agents tremendous sales opportunities for 2011,” says UK General Manager Peter Adamou. “And now that Louis Cruises are available on Amadeus, it’s easy for agents to select our cruise-only offering, then bolt on flights and hotels, using the same GDS, to create a complete package.”

Louis Cruises has just been made available on the browser-based Amadeus Cruise desktop sales solution for travel professionals, and the Cruise Application Programming Interface (API) for online sales.

The new brochure, titled ‘Sea of Memories’, showcases the five Louis Cruises ships available to the UK market: Louis Majesty, Louis Cristal, Coral, Aquamarine and Orient Queen.

Two Voyages For the Price of one Offer

By guest blogger Steve Newman

Hurtigruten is offering two voyages for the price of one on its Classic Round Voyage, Voyage North and Voyage South cruise-only itineraries. Available on selected dates between now and December 16, these last-minute deals offer savings of up to £1344 per person and are a great way to see the very best of Norway and, hopefully, spot the Northern Lights.

Simply book a voyage and two people can travel for the price of one. And of course, as the winter sets in, Norway is a perfect place to see the Northern Lights. The ships are ideal viewing platforms, away from artificial light and, as they travel further north above the Arctic Circle, chances of spotting them increase.

‘TWO FOR ONE’ OFFER ON VOYAGE NORTH - £940 PER COUPLE (SAVE £940) – Depart on selected dates until December 16 for a six-night Voyage North from Bergen to Kirkenes. Now costing from £940 per couple, including full board on the ship. Flights are extra. Based on two sharing.

Chic and stylish, SeaDream’s 56-stateroom yachts are favoured for their elegant informality, state-of-the-art facilities, personal service provided by a crew of 95, inclusive open bar and gratuities, oceanview accommodations, luxury spa and world class cuisine.

By guest blogger Steve Newman

Titan HiTours has unveiled its brand new Cruise & Tour brochure for 2011. The programme encompasses an extensive selection of ocean cruises combined with imaginative, land-based touring packages that take in every possible point of the compass from Alaska to Antarctica. With highlights ranging from the splendour of a stylish cruise around the British Isles on the new Queen Elizabeth to a passage through the Panama Canal - as well as a wide choice of no-fly cruises with direct departures from UK seaports - the Cruise & Tour programme presents an unrivalled choice of exciting holidays afloat combined with the quality, high standards and value for money for which Titan HiTours is renowned.

The popular VIP Home Departure Service, which collects customers from - and returns them to - their own front door has now been extended to cover mainland Scotland, The Channel Islands and Northern Ireland and allows for every client to be picked up from their home address, transferred to their departure point and returned to their own front door at the end of their holiday at no extra cost. That means those in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands are entitled to a home pick-up and door-to-door transfer to their nearest regional airport, plus free domestic flights to the London airports to connect with any international departure (or free onward connections to the major seaports for clients taking an ex-UK cruise).

Another new addition with plenty of possible departure dates (11 in total) is the 8-day Dubrovnik & the Dalmatian Islands itinerary, which incorporates a brief stay in this fabled city (known romantically as the Pearl of the Adriatic) with a voyage along the stunningly beautiful Dalmatian coastline. The holiday costs from £995 per person, to include flights, transfers, half-board accommodation, sightseeing tours as detailed in the itinerary, port taxes and the VIP Home Departure Service.

Those looking to avoid the cost and hassle of jetting away might prefer the brochure's wide selection of no-fly cruises, which involve direct departures from the UK's major seaports. There are a total of five new no-fly cruise itineraries in the brochure, of which the closest to home is the 11-day Queen Elizabeth's maiden Around the British Isles cruise, which has to be booked by 30 November 2010 for a departure from Southampton on 2 September 2011.
