Two Favourites Return To Quark's Arctic Fleet

By Editor Simon Veness

It's not often I beat our resident adventure cruise expert, Steve Newman, to the punch with a story on his favourite subject, but I did pick up this latest news from Polar expedition specialist Quark Expeditions, and thought it had some great ideas for 2015.

As we know full well at World of Cruising, adventure cruising now has a large and rapidly increasing following, hence it is a regular part of our feature line-up, and we also think it is worth highlighting on a regular basis as it truly offers that off-the-beaten-track experience.

Cruising to the Antarctic and Arctic Oceans is a sensitive issue, as there remain serious environmental concerns about large numbers of people visiting these parts of the world, especially by ship. But Quark have established a peerless reputation for handling these issues and still providing an amazing voyage into these unique regions.

And their big news for the Arctic season the year after next seas two popular vessels return to the fleet for the June-October period:

M/V Sea Adventurer

Currently part of Quark’s Antarctic fleet, Sea Adventurer (above) will undergo a refurbishment of cabin interiors before sailing during the Arctic 2015 season. This ship is a customer favourite because of its intimate size and ample public space. With a 1A ice-class rating and its operational range, this ship is well-equipped to navigate some of the more ice-laden regions visited by some of Quark’s Arctic itineraries. Formerly known as Clipper Adventurer, Sea Adventurer has an active stability system which helps steady the ship when sailing through rough waters. With a maximum occupancy of 117 and plenty of outdoor deck space, she offers a comfortable journey with plenty of opportunities for up close and personal viewings of the wildlife and scenery.

Sea Adventurer will operate eight itineraries in Iceland, Greenland, Svalbard, the Canadian Arctic and the Northwest Passage during the 2015 summer season.

M/V Ocean Nova

Originally designed to take on challenging ice conditions as a year-round Greenlandic ferry, the Ocean Nova is a 1B ice-class vessel with a small draft that allows her to navigate in shallow waters and reach places larger ships are unable to access. Last used by Quark during the Antarctic 2011/12 season, there are few expedition vessels available these days with fewer than 100 passengers, hence Ocean Nova offers a unique and intimate experience while offering full private facilities and public spaces. The top deck observation lounge affords fabulous views of the incredible ice, fjords and wildlife. With a maximum of 84 passengers, this will be Quark’s most intimate ship.

Ocean Nova will operate 11 itineraries through Iceland, Greenland, Spitsbergen, the UK and Norway during the 2015 season.

Quark president Hans Lagerweij said: “We’re thrilled to have both of these nimble and capable vessels in the Arctic season. The high ice class of both will allow for easier navigation through Arctic ice, enhance our passengers’ expedition experience and provide unprecedented access on our northern itineraries.”

Arctic 2015 Season Details

Take A Virtual Arctic Or Antarctica Expedition

Here at World of Cruising, we're always looking at new ways of getting to the polar regions, as they remain one of the greatest adventure cruise experiences on the planet.

And, if you're thinking about going and want to dip your toe into the ice -cold waters from your front room first, so to speak, Quark Expeditions may well have the answer as the company has launched an immersive and comprehensive new website promoting expedition travel in the Arctic and Antarctica.

Far more than an online booking tool, visitors to the site will be captivated with all aspects of a Polar expedition and will (hopefully) be inspired by high-resolution images, most of which have been submitted by Quark passengers from their own voyages. Also available are videos which take you through a typical day in the life of an Arctic or Antarctic voyage, as well as how to pack for the Polar Regions. All content will be available for social sharing.

Be inspired to walk among giant penguin colonies, explore stretches of the Antarctic Peninsula by kayak, or view an incredible display of the northern lights from the ship’s deck; it's all on offer in these amazing regions, and can be explored in more detail at the new site.

It's Party Time With Regent

As we start to hit the pre-Christmas party season, it's interesting to note what many cruise lines do by way of extra events for the festive season, with Yuletide activities and lots of other seasonal 'extras' that are all part of the general cruise experience at this time of year.

But here at World of Cruising central, we recently had a note from luxury all-inclusive line Regent Seven Seas that we thought was worth passing on. Parties at sea are not necessaily new, but it's extremely illuminating to see a line that makes a real feature of them, with no less than FIVE separate opportunities for guests to meet and mingle.
In particular, we like the sound of the Bloc Party, as it is a highly original idea that no-one else is currently doing. Here's what Regent say about their 'party time' ensemble (as a quick aside, all Regent suites include a fully stocked bar, hence it's easy to 'take a glass' as they say!):

Bloc Party - A fantastic way to meet for our guests as the Captain, General Manager and Cruise Director will assemble on the bridge, ring the cocktail bell and invite passengers to take a glass from their suite and make their way to the corridor. Here they will find our butlers and stewardesses ready to serve drinks and canapés. Also other Officers and Staff
are on each deck to socialise while they make acquaintances with fellow passengers and neighbours. During this unique event, the Captain, General Manager and Cruise Director will make their way down to meet everybody personally and welcome them to the RSSC family.

First Timers Welcome - When guests join Regent for the first time, there will be a gathering at the pre-dinner cocktail hour where they can meet our Cruise Director and Cruise Consultant, who will answer any questions they might have. They can help to start their cruise the best possible way and meet fellow passengers for first-time Regent guests.

Seven Seas (Repeaters) Party - This event is for all guests who have sailed with Regent before. The event is also to recognise our long-time cruisers as well as a night together enjoying Caviar and delicious Canapes.

Farewell Party and Crew Capers
- The Crew shows their cultural heritage and talent as
they perform a show and all crew are there to give a fond farewell to our guests. This is a real highlight not to be missed as this Party is always paired with a standing ovation.

TPG Event - This is an event for all our Titanium, Platinum and Gold tiered guests, and can be in the form of a local private show on an exclusive excursion to recognise and show appreciation to these guests.

So, if you're looking for a real 'party' cruise, with a sophisticated difference, Regent really do tick all the boxes!

Hurtigruten Launches The Authentic Lofoten Experience

We have long been fans of the great country of Norway and feel it is one of THE great cruise destinations in the world, so much so, in fact, it will be featured as the new adventure cruise destination in the new-look January edition of World of Cruising.

And, in timely fashion, Norway's majestic mountains and picturesque fishing villages are at the centre of a new 12-day tour with specialist cruise operator Hurtigruten, combining a voyage on the MS Midnatsol along the Norwegian coast with a three-day stay in the beautiful Lofoten islands

Departing on March 3, Midnatsol will ply its usual route from Bergen, heading northwards up the coast to disembark in Svolvær where, over the next three days, guests will discover the area by land. There will be white water rapid rides on the sea, high coastal walks and plenty of other activities to highlight the attractions of the region.

The trip costs from £1,295 per person (based on two sharing an inside cabin) including voyage, land arrangements, full board and full day ‘Lofoten Highlights’ excursion. Flights are available for an additional £450 from London.

Cunard Hits £1million Target For Prince's Trust

Cunard has succeeded in raising its target of £1million for The Prince’s Trust – an achievement that will be celebrated in style on board their ship Queen Victoria at a special lunch in Southampton tomorrow (Nov 29).

It is fitting that the celebrations take place on Queen Victoria as it was when HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, accompanied by HRH The Prince of Wales, named the vessel in 2007 that the company launched its association with The Trust.

In less than six years, £1m has been raised and its work to turn around the lives of disadvantaged young people in the UK. The Trust gives young people practical and financial support, developing key workplace skills, confidence and motivation. It works with 14 to 30-year-olds who have struggled at school, have been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law.

Various fund-raising activities have taken place both aboard the three ships of Cunard and ashore.

On the ships, these have included the auctioning of the nautical map at the end of each voyage, generous guest donations and a proportion of funds raised at special dinners for World Cruise passengers being assigned to the Trust

Shoreside activities have included the donation of Cunard cruises for auction at high-profile Prince’s Trust events; setting up contributions from Cunard’s Ship Visit Programme; arranging dedicated Prince’s Trust voyages and events; organising an annual ‘Week for the Trust’ fund-raising drive in the company’s Southampton offices and participating in “Palace to Palace” sponsored bike rides.

Angus Struthers, Cunard’s Marketing Director, said: “For the last six years, we have been delighted to work with The Prince's Trust and raising our first £1m to support the outstanding work it does is something everyone at Cunard can be rightly proud of. We look forward to continuing our work with the charity for many years to come.”

Martina Milburn, chief executive of The Prince’s Trust, added: “With youth unemployment still affecting hundreds of thousands of young people in the UK, it has never been more important to support those who are furthest from finding work. I would like to thank Cunard for their commitment and enthusiasm which has helped us to get many young lives back on track.”

Grab An Atlantic Alliance Recipe!

Cruise passengers who enjoy the ports of Europe's West Coast who might also like to sample the cuisines of the region will want to know of a new initiative from port group the Atlantic Alliance.

The member ports are currently celebrating this year’s theme ”Food & Wine” and have prepared a culinary journey of discovery around its famous wine-growing areas, outstanding cuisine and typical national specialties.

The Atlantic Alliance is a marketing association of 18 cruise ports and destinations Hamburg to Lisbon, plus British and Irish ports, and they have created a very special personal recipe book, highlighting favourite culinary specialties.

Spread over 50 pages, the port representatives describe their national “must-try” aperitifs, appetisers, main courses and desserts, all adding up to a delicious 'cruise' through the region. For example the German Grünkohl (Kale), which is a traditional Northern German dish, mainly served during the cold months in late autumn and winter, or the Dutch Wentelteefjes (Dutch eggy bread) always go down a treat at breakfast or brunch on the weekend.

Antwerp's Kattina Glasinovich presents Elixir d‘Anvers, a wholesome liqueur, which has been in existence since 1863. It is made from 32 plants and herbs from the four corners of the world that impart a unique taste to the liqueur. British representatives show how to prepare scones with clotted cream and jam, while Michael McCarthy from Cork demonstrates to cook a real Irish stew.

The Normandy ports offer a huge and rich variety of seafood. Cakes as well the “crepe suzette” are definitely worth a try. The most popular dish of Cantabria is the Cocido Montañes, a stew. Dolores Rois from the Port of Vigo explains the myths and mysteries surrounding the ritual of making queimada, the “fire drink” of Galicia. And last but not least, Lisbon’s clams in garlicky broth are unique and were named after Bulhão Pato, a 19th-century Portuguese poet. Although his verses have been largely forgotten, the dish remains popular throughout Lisbon.

The recipe book may inspire for a European festive menu and is downloadable at:

A New-Look Wind

Silversea Cruises' Silver Wind has just completed a comprehensive refurbishment during a two-week dry dock in Palermo, Italy, this month.

Major enhancements have been made to the dining venues and public spaces, with renovations in terms of new carpets, upholstery and other soft goods in an overall colour palette of warm earth tones. The Bar, in particular, features all new furniture and furnishings in a contrasting colour scheme of cooler shades of teal mixed with neutral tones of brown and beige.

Other highlights include brand new tiling and deck furniture in the pool area and a redesigned buffet area in the speciality restaurant La Terrazza

Speciality restaurant Le Champagne, the only Relais & Châteaux restaurant at sea, has also undergone a complete refurbishment. This popular dining venue has been transformed with an upgraded entrance design, the addition of backlit wine displays, a redesigned seating layout, new wood flooring and new fabrics and window dressings.

Completing the refurbishment was a fresh reconditioning and polishing of teak decks and woodwork. The ship also underwent thorough maintenance on mechanical and propulsion systems.

More Reasons To Try An Un-Cruise Adventure

You may remember we featured a cruise in Alaska with Un-Cruise Adventures in the most recent edition of World of Cruising (which you can still see on this link - pages 32-36), and we also featured the voyage in day-by-day blogs here at Time Spent At Sea, a series that earned a nomination in the 2013 Avis A-List Awards for travel blogs.

You can still see the blogs, starting with Day One, on this link. So you can tell we are committed Un-Cruise fans, and are always on the lookout for news from this highly distinctive and original adventure-cruise line.

With that in mind, here are some snippets about their forthcoming cruises for 2014 aboard their luxury period style of the unique SS Legacy (above), which we can thoroughly recommend as well worth looking into.

Alaska
From June 15 through August 17, there will be 10 departures of a new Alaska’s Golden History cruise that bring the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush alive. The 7-night cruise visits Wrangell, Petersburg, Sitka, Glacier Bay National Park, Haines and Skagway, while Frederick Sound and Icy Strait are also prime whale-watching territory. An 11-night Gold Rush Legacy cruise between Seattle and Juneau (and reverse) will be offered in June and August.

Columbia and Snake Rivers
From March through May and September through November, week-long cruises depart round-trip from Portland, Oregon, to explore the history and scenery of the Columbia and Snake Rivers. Areas visited include the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, Clarkston, Hells Canyon, Walla Walla, Washington Wine Country, The Dalles and Astoria, all of which offer another rare and history-rich cruise experience

Celebrity Enhances Loyalty Progranmme

Celebrity Cruises has announced its enhanced Captain’s Club loyalty programme. The new programme includes two additional levels of status and rewards beyond the existing “Elite” level, the highest previous level of membership in the brand’s current four-tiered programme. Guests can also accelerate their progression through the loyalty tiers with a new Club Points system that recognises the stateroom category as well as the days spent onboard.

Effective on sailings commencing this week, the new Captain’s Club will offer a SIX-tier programme. The Club’s current levels of “Preview,” “Classic,” “Select” and “Elite” will remain, with two new tiers – “Elite Plus” and “Zenith" – each with their own unique benefits and privileges:

  • Members who achieve the new Elite Plus status will receive broader benefits, including additional beverage and speciality dining discounts, complimentary 200-minute Internet packages, complimentary cappuccinos, lattes and more.
  • Members who achieve Zenith status will receive benefits and perks befitting this ultimate level of membership, such as access to Michael’s Club Lounge (available fleetwide in 2014), a complimentary premium alcoholic beverage package, complimentary laundry, a 1,600-minute Internet package, and other benefits.

Members’ previous cruise credits will be automatically converted into Club Points, and members will retain all of the benefits they earned in the programme to date, with no expiration. In many cases, guests may automatically become members of the new Elite Plus or Zenith tiers. It is important to note that no current members will lose any of the benefits they enjoy today. Full details are on www.celebritycruises.co.uk/captainsclub.

Celebrity's director of loyalty, Lee Moreau, explained: “At a time when many loyalty programmes are cutting back on benefits or making it more difficult to redeem rewards, we’re thrilled to do just the opposite. Guest loyalty is the cornerstone to any successful business, and that’s why, at Celebrity, we make our guests the centre of our attention. We hope this reinvigorated programme will show our guests even more vividly how much we appreciate their loyalty, and allow us to welcome them back onboard even more frequently.”

Captain’s Club members can now access exclusive special pricing through the Captain’s Club portal on the website.
By simply entering their name and Captain’s Club member number on the site, they can instantly see available loyalty pricing.

Cruising With Jean-Michel Cousteau

Cruise ship lectures are now a significant part of the cruise experience, and several lines are now making them a headline feature in their own right. It's not uncommon to find big-name speakers among the lecturers, hence it is something we keep a close eye on these days.

Luxury line Paul Gauguin Cruises has just revealed its guest speaker line-up for 2014, and we thought it was worth passing on as the line-up includes speakers who are experts in the culinary arts, wine, photography, fine art, history, music and the wonders of the deep.

Foremost among them is world-famous oceanographer and environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau, who joins several sailings aboard the Paul Gauguin in 2014: to the Society Islands & Tuamotus Marquesas; Fiji & Australia; and Tonga, Cook & Society Islands. In addition to presenting lectures and videos of his work, he will accompany several dives from the ship.

They also include Chef Propriétaire of one of the finest restaurants in Paris, the two Michelin-starred Restaurant Apicius, Jean-Pierre Vigato, who has inspired signature menus for Paul Gauguin Cruises for several years. This celebrated chef will be onboard the Gauguin’s June 25 Australia & South-east Asia voyage and will provide culinary demonstrations featuring his gastronomic techniques.

From the vineyards of California’s Sonoma County and Central Coast to the great estates of Bordeaux, Daniel Baron has learned the importance of the pursuit of excellence in winemaking. Today, he serves as winemaker for the Napa Valley’s prestigious Silver Oak Cellars. Baron will be aboard the Gauguin’s December 3 Tuamotus & Society Islands sailing for a lecture and wine-tasting.

The full list is long and equally impressive and you can see more on this link.

Brittania Takes Shape!

By Editor, Simon Veness

The advent of P&O Cruises' new ship Britannia promises to be one of THE major cruise landmarks of 2015, and the latest photos of the build process in the famous Monfalcone shipyard of the Fincantieri company in Trieste suggest things are taking shape extremely well.

The series of pictures shows the bow and superstructure more than half finished, which is
an amazing rate of construction since the keel-laying ceremony was held on May 15 and the main steel-cutting ceremony was held only in early October.
At 141,000 tons, it will be the largest vessel ever built for P&O when it makes its debut in spring of 2015, bearing the classic name of two previous ships in the company line (dating back to 1835 and 1887) as well as being the name of the former Royal Yacht (and, for which, P&O had to seek special royal approval).

For the first time a British design company, Richmond, is overseeing the whole ship’s interiors to incorporate the classic and iconic history of P&O Cruises with modern design and features to appeal to both existing and a new generation of passengers.

Richmond, leading designers in the hospitality industry, have a remarkable portfolio of iconic British hotels, notably The Langham London (flagship of the Hong Kong based Langham Hotels); Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park; The Intercontinental London and Four Seasons Hampshire Hotel and Spa and international resort hotels including the Four Seasons Mauritius; Sandy Lane Barbados; Boca Beach Club at Boca Raton, Miami; the Fairmont Montreux Palace, Switzerland as well as many award-winning hotels, including the Four
Seasons Budapest and the Waldorf Trianon Palace Hotel and Spa, Versailles.

The 3,611 passenger ship, described as a “modern classic” will offer a stylish and innovative new design and an unprecedented number of passenger facilities, along with many of the brand’s classic and iconic features.

Many details have yet to be revealed, but the latest pictures show the grand design is definitely going to be both eye-catching - and large!

The Monfalcone shipyard has produced the recent Royal Princess for Princess Cruises and the Carnival Breeze of Carnival Cruise Lines, as well as the deluxe L'Austral class trio for French line Compagnie du Ponant.

Crystal's Exclusive 'Rhino Excursion'

Well here’s another one to tempt you as we know many of our readers are ardent wildlife watchers when you’re cruising. In fact, it’s something we at World of Cruising are increasingly keen to focus on. So here’s what popped into our inbox recently.

Crystal Cruises’ newest Boutique Adventure promises an ultra-intimate and exclusive, hands-on “Rhino Conservation Experience” in Africa. Offered with Crystal Serenity’s March 10 voyage from Singapore to Cape Town, the excursion offers the opportunity to be a part of the vital local tracking and protection efforts aimed at keeping the animal from extinction. From helping locate rhinos to notching their ears while anaesthetised (enabling researchers to identify the animal and aide in the repopulation process), guests will assist the expert anti-poaching team from beginning to end.

The “Rhino Conservation Experience” is available only to guests also participating in Crystal’s mid-cruise, off-ship Overland Adventure to the Phinda Private Game Reserve. The Overland Adventure, which departs from Durban and returns to Port Elizabeth, features two nights of luxury accommodation and game drives in search of lions, elephants, buffalo and leopards.

The full 21-night sailing departs Singapore for Jakarta, Mauritius, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town (overnight) with a two-night, inclusive pre-cruise programme to Bangkok and Cambodia beginning on March 7.  All-inclusive fly/cruise prices start from £6,344 per person if booked by January 3. The “Rhino Conservation Experience” costs $1,287 per person.

Scottish Ports On Course For Record Cruise Season

Cruise Scotland - the marketing association for the Scottish ports of call - is stepping up its campaign to attract more visitors in future on the strength of a forecast for record numbers in 2014.

An end-of-season report reveals that passenger figures this year were up 9.7% on 2012 to 384,639, influenced in part by increasing vessel capacity (like the QM2 at Greenock, above). Vessel calls at 454 were down slightly on the 466 ships seen last year but cruise tourism is estimated to have been worth £48.8 million to Scotland in 2013, a rise of 5%.

The trend towards larger vessels continues next year with 450 arrivals currently expected, carrying approximately 390,000 passengers, the highest number yet to ports around the country. And Victor Sandison, Cruise Scotland’s Chairman, said: “Working closely with the Scottish Government and various agencies, we continue to make significant progress in a highly competitive, expanding international market.

“Over the past four seasons, vessels calling are up 26%, passengers by 43% and the value of cruise tourism to Scotland by 52.5%. We are committed to increasing awareness of the country’s many attractions, improving visitor experience and growing our market share.”

Scotland’s Minister for Energy, Enterprise & Tourism, Fergus Ewing MSP, added: “With the end of season figures showing an increase in passenger figures during 2013 as well as 2014 currently scheduling around 390,000 passengers, these are very encouraging results. They are testament to the hard work of all the industry and the hard work of the Cruise Scotland team.

“The Scottish Government will continue to support the cruise industry, across all of Scotland, and we will work closely together in order to make the most of what Scotland has to offer at every potential destination – irrespective of the size of the vessel.”

Challenges faced by the industry currently include continued lobbying with other UK bodies, trade associations and ports to resolve issues over the UK Border Force’s face-to-document checks for passengers; tougher sulphur emission controls from 2015, which may impact on cruise calls to some ports; and constraints on coach capacity in some regions alongside insufficient tour guides with linguistic skills.

* Cruise Scotland was established in 2009 to promote and market Scotland as a first-class cruise destination to operators and work on behalf of members on relevant issues. It now has 20 members, including 16 ports, large and small, two major ground handlers/shore excursion providers and two castles, with recruitment ongoing.
