Vista heralds Carnival's return to Europe, and promises something old, something new, something borrowed and something brew

Carnival Cruise Line promised a spectacular reveal of the features on board their newest and biggest ship, Carnival Vista, launching in May 2016.

But the best news to come out of last night’s event at New York’s Time Warner Centre was that the ship will spend its debut summer season in the Mediterranean.

Carnival has not had a ship in Europe since 2013; it blamed its withdrawal on higher airfares which deterred American customers, and it struggled to create an identity among UK consumers.

The 133,500-ton Vista, which will carry almost 4,000 passengers, is to operate 18 sailings in the Med, beginning with a 13-day cruise from Trieste to Barcelona on May 1, 2016. The remaining voyages, of 8, 10 and 12 days will depart from Barcelona and Athens throughout the summer visiting ports including Dubrovnik, Izmir (Turkey), Corfu, Livorno, Marseille, Messina, Corfu and Malta.

Vista will leave Barcelona on October 21, 2016 for a 13-night Transatlantic crossing to New York, but its final homeport is still to be disclosed.

As for the ship itself, it’s largely a matter of something old, something new, something borrowed, something brew.

Let’s explain that last bit first: Vista is to have its own brewery on board, supplying the Red Frog pub with three different varieties of beer.

Something old? Count in that bar and a number of other food and drink venues that debuted on Carnival Breeze and which have been rolled out across other ships in the fleet as part of the Fun Ship 2.0 programme. Think Guy Fieri burger joint and Cucina del Capitano Italian restaurant for starters.

Something new? The first IMAX cinema at sea will be part of Vista’s multiplex, and the three-deck high screen will show first-run movies at the same time as their mainstream release ashore.



Another first is SkyRide, a pedal-powered roller coaster (above) encircling the ship’s ropes course. The dual track is 800 feet long and 150 feet above the waves.

Senior cruise director and brand ambassador John Heald, from Essex, hosted the reveal, but declined to confirm whether he would be the launch cruise director. “It’s a young man’s game,” said John, who was celebrating his birthday on Thursday.

Mark Tamis, senior vice-president of guest operations, added: “We would love John to do the job, but it’s up to him to decide.”

Tamis said Vista was Carnival’s most innovative ship yet, but many of its features - including the al fresco dining out on a wide promenade deck, and the creation of family staterooms - are ideas borrowed from rival operators such as Norwegian and Royal Caribbean.

Vista will have 72 suites, 880 balcony staterooms, 293 cabins with an outside view, and 723 interior cabins.

Its WaterWorks fun zone incorporates a 455-ft tube slide and a 300-ft twidter spiral slide. SkyRide encircles a suspended ropes course.

The main Reflections dining room seats 1,474 passengers, while the Horizons restaurant accommodates 702. Speciality restaurants include Cucina del Capitano, Fahrenheit 55 steakhouse, Bonsai Sushi, and the JiJi Asian Kitchen.

The poolside Lido Maketplace incorporates a pizzeria, BlueIguana Cantina, Comfort Kitchen, Carnival Deli, and the Guy Fieri burger joint.

Princess Cruises offers £250 on-board spending money




Princess Cruises has an offer on more than 380 cruises across Europe, Alaska, Caribbean, Japan and Singapore, comprising up to $400 (£250) on board spending money per couple and a free balcony upgrade. 'The Best Things in Life are Free’ is available on selected 2015 voyages booked before 30 November.

The on board spend can be used in a variety of ways including spa treatments, shore excursions and dinner at a speciality restaurant.

Prices per person for a 7-night ‘Western Caribbean’ cruise start at £1,249 for a 14-night Mediterranean Medley cruise roundtrip from Southampton and £1,299 for a 12-night Baltic Heritage cruise roundtrip from Southampton on Royal Princess.

Grand voyages to the Far East with Regent Seven Seas Cruises




Regent Seven Seas Cruises has announced its 2015-2016 Winter Collection, revealing a line-up that features a variety of destination-rich itineraries in Asia, Africa, South America, Europe, the Caribbean and Alaska.  In total, the Regent Seven Seas Cruises fleet will visit more than 150 ports in 50 different countries with its Winter Collection, including several overnight stays.
For sailings in the Mediterranean, Asia and Africa, the company is introducing new options for its complimentary pre- and post-cruise land programmes which include a free three-night hotel stay, complemented by guided tours.  For example, guests booked on voyages beginning or ending in Bangkok or Singapore can discover the ancient temples of Angkor Wat and explore the jungle while enjoying the comforts of six-star hospitality. 
The line has also introduced eight new Grand Voyages, ranging from a 35-night Cape Town to Miami sailing, all the way up to a 72-night South American roundtrip Miami cruise.  The 49-night Singapore to Tokyo Grand Voyage introduces two new ports of call for Regent Seven Seas with: Boracay Island, known for its award winning beaches and Jeju, South Korea, home to Hallasan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The unstoppable growth of cruising - 77 per cent more passengers than 10 years ago



Global demand for cruising has increased by 77 percent in the last decade, from 12 million to 21.3 million passengers.

The figures released by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) on the eve of the Seatrade Med conference in Barcelona show that worldwide, cruise industry expenditures generated $117 billion in total economic contributions, supporting the employment of 891,009 full-time equivalent employees with total wages of $38.47 billion.

The announcement also coincides with the first visit to the Mediterranean by Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas (above) one of the two biggest cruise ships in the world.

“The cruise industry is truly global, bringing together a diverse mix of international passengers and crew to experience exciting itineraries, multiple destinations, and exceptional holiday vacation value on every continent,” said Christine Duffy, CLIA President and CEO.  “With so many fun options and a high return on vacation experience, it’s not surprising that the popularity of cruise holidays continues to grow. This study shows that the cruise industry’s growth is also generating increased jobs, income, and revenue in all regions of the world.”

“The figures published today show that nearly 45 percent of the industry’s 2013 global output was generated in Europe,” said Pierfrancesco Vago, Chairman of CLIA Europe and Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises. “Unquestionably, the cruise industry today is a key contributor to Europe’s economic recovery, creating real jobs and growth at a time when both are hard to come by. With more Europeans choosing to cruise, more tourists cruising in European waters and more cruise ships being built in European ship yards, the weight of our industry in Europe can only continue to increase in years to come.”

The independent report is the first to assess the worldwide economic impact of the cruise industry. Commissioned by CLIA from Business Research and Economic Advisers (BREA), The Global Economic Contribution of Cruise Tourism 2013 found that:

  • 21.31 million cruise passengers embarked from ports around the world
  • 55 per cent of all passengers are sourced from North America (11.82 million), including 10.92 million who live in the US
  • 30 per cent of passengers are from Europe (6.4 million), including 1.73 million from the UK and Ireland, and 1.69 million from Germany
  • Also enjoying cruise holidays are travellers from Australia (833,000), Brazil (732,000), and China (727,000)
  • The average length of a cruise is 7 days, with 3-4 port calls
  • The cruise industry generated nearly 115 million passenger and crew visit days at ports around the globe; cruise ship passengers and crew spent an average of £78 each port day
