Windstar unveils Star Breeze and Star Legend

A rendering of the Star Bar
Small ship cruise line Windstar Cruises will expand its fleet from four to six ships in May 2015 with the addition of two vessels from Seabourn. Recently Windstar Cruises announced the list of changes it plans to make to the two vessels to align them with their brand.

Windstar will take possession of the first Seabourn ship on 15 April 2015. It will undergo an $8.5 million (£5.6 million) renovation over the course of three weeks in Genoa, Italy before débuting as Star Breeze during a christening ceremony on 6 May in Nice, France.

The second vessel will join the fleet on 4 May 2015, and undergo a similar $8.5 million (£5.6 million) renovation before being christened Star Legend on 25 May in Rome, Italy.

Hans Birkholz, Windstar Cruises’ chief executive officer said “We learned a lot about our guests’ preferences with the début of Star Pride last year. We are taking their feedback and giving them what they want with the launch of these two all suite yachts.”

Both yachts will have a capacity of 212 passengers at double occupancy. Upgrades to the suites, public areas, and dining venues will be made as part of the renovation works.

The public areas will receive updated décor, complete with new and more modern upholstery, lighting, wall coverings, carpeting, ceiling finishes, window treatments, and floorings. A contemporary colour palette will be used that will combine sand and marine shades to contrast with the warmth of wood finishes, thereby creating an up-scale, nautical feel.

All restaurants will be transformed as will every one of the 106 suites which will receive a modern colour palette of vibrant blue hues, rich brown tones, and opulent greys.

Windstar is also planning a $3 million (£1.9 million) additional renovation of Star Pride in April 2016. Star Pride joined Windstar’s fleet from Seabourn in May 2014 following renovation works.

Seabourn orders a second brand new cruise ship

Luxury cruise line Seabourn has announced that it has a second brand new 40,350-ton vessel on order with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri S.p.A. The first new Seabourn ship is scheduled for delivery in mid-to-late 2016, and the second is expected to be delivered in the spring of 2018.

Seabourn Odyssey at sea
This announcement will take the fleet up to a size of five ships. The two new vessels will help to replace capacity that was lost when Seabourn Pride was sold to Windstar Cruises in April 2014, and when Seabourn Spirit and Seabourn Legend are also sold to Windstar Cruises in April and May next year.

The configuration of both new vessels will be based on the popular Seabourn Odyssey-class ships. Each will accommodate up to 604 guests based on double occupancy of the lower berths and every cabin will be a suite grade and will come with a private balcony. The ships will feature one additional deck as well as brand new expanded public areas.

As you would expect from a luxury cruise line the staff-to-guest ration is nearly one-to-one assuring attentive, personalised and responsive service.

Richard D. Meadows, Seabourn's president, said at the announcement of the first new vessel "The new ship will continue the evolution that began with Seabourn's fleet expansion, adding modern design elements and innovations consistent with Seabourn's reputation for understated elegance."

Both ships will benefit from the interior design skills of Adam D. Tihany who will be responsible for designing the ship’s interiors entirely, including all indoor and outdoor guest areas, multiple dining venues, the spa, the showrooms, casino and lounges, the outdoor deck areas, and the innovative and popular Seabourn Square which will act as the social hub of the ship.

Tihany worked on the Celebrity Solstice  class of cruise ships and is renowned for his restaurant projects for high-profile celebrity chefs such as Heston Blumenthal and Wolfgang Puck, as well as for luxury hotel projects including the Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas, The Oberoi Hotel in New Delhi, and Hotel Cipriani in Venice.

The announcements of two new vessels follows news that Seabourn will visit the Qatari capital Doha and the desert island haven of Sir Bani Yas off the coast of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates for the first time in 2015.

Doha will be the penultimate port of call on the luxury cruise line’s new 18-day Holy Land & Gems of Arabia cruise from Athens to Dubai, sailing on Seabourn Sojourn in October 2015. Doha is a vibrant multicultural city with impressive architecture and plentiful shopping opportunities. Cruise-only prices start from £4,999 per person based on two people sharing a suite on the 31 October 2015 departure. The 18-day cruise departs from Piraeus (Athens, Greece) and calls at Agios Nikolaos (Crete, Greece), Haifa (Tel Aviv, Israel), and Ashdod (Jerusalem, Israel), before travelling along the Suez Canal. The next port of call is Aqaba (for Petra, Jordan), Salalah (Oman), Muscat (Oman) and Doha (Qatar), before finally arriving into Dubai (UAE).

Sir Bani Yas island will be the first port of call for guests on board Seabourn’s new 18-day Dubai to Singapore Arabian Jewels & India sailing in November 2015, also on-board Seabourn Sojourn. The island is a haven for wildlife and is home to more than 100 bird species and 30 species of mammals. During the sail-in there may also be the opportunity for sightings of dolphins and turtles in the turquoise seas of the Persian Gulf. Cruise-only prices start from £5,499 per person based on two people sharing a suite on the 18 November 2015 departure.  The 18-day cruise departs from Dubai (UAE) and calls at Sir Bani Yas Island (Abu Dhabi, UAE), Abu Dhabi (UAE), Muscat (Oman), Mumbai (India), Mangalore (India), Cochin (India), and Phuket (Thailand), before arriving into Singapore.

Seabourn Signs Formal Deal For New Ship

We have been eagerly awaiting the news of the formal signing of the contract for Seabourn to confirm a fourth new ship, and here it is today.

And the confirmation includes the details that the latest ship from their 2009 Odyssey-class series will be their biggest to date at 40,350 tons and is due for delivery in mid-2016.

The contract for construction of a new ultra-deluxe, all-suite vessel continues the fleet modernisation the company began with the launch of Seabourn Odyssey (above) and followed up with Seabourn Sojourn (2010) and Seabourn Quest (2011), and which has been widely recognised as a game-changer in the luxury cruise sector.

The configuration of the as-yet unnamed vessel will be based on the 32,346-ton Odyssey-class, with one additional deck and new expanded public areas. The ship will be built by Fincantieri S.p.A. in Italy, and is expected to carry  604 guests, based on double occupancy of the all-suite lower berths, as compared to the Odyssey trio's 450. However, the design will maintain Seabourn’s high ratio of space per guest and enable highly personalised service by nearly one staff member per guest on board. In addition, every suite will feature a private veranda.

Seabourn president Richard D. Meadows insisted: “The new ship will continue the evolution that began with Seabourn’s fleet expansion, adding modern design elements and innovations consistent with Seabourn’s reputation for understated elegance. With its delivery, the most highly rated cruise line in the world will also offer travellers the newest fleet of ships in the luxury segment.”

The new vessel will replace capacity - Seabourn Pride, Legend and Spirit - that is being transferred to new owners Windstar Cruises in April 2014, April 2015, and May 2015, respectively. The contract with Fincantieri also continues a longstanding relationship of more than two decades between Seabourn’s parent company, Carnival Corporation & plc and the Italian shipbuilder.

Windstar Reveal Pride Transformation

Windstar Cruises have announced the first new design changes to their Star Pride, which joins the fleet in May after sailing as the Seabourn Pride of Seabourn Cruises for 25 years

The arrival will be the first of three 10,000-ton vessels being added to the tall-ship style of Windstar, who are re-making the ultra-luxury ships in a more casual style, starting with the Pride.

The renovations for the ship's public spaces, suites and dining venues
will take place in Barcelona from April 17, immediately following handover, ready for the inaugural voyage on May 5. The other two 208-passenger vessels will join Windstar in 2015.

The company's chief executive officer Hans Birkholz explained: “The planning for Star Pride’s transformation to Windstar’s unique private yacht style is nearly complete. Our enhancements include significant style changes and stem-to-stern upgrades. The main theme is a casual elegant ambiance, with a warm contemporary style. The look and feel of the renovations will align with our sailing fleet.”

Here's how the renovation will shape up:

Public Spaces: the majority of areas will receive updated décor, complete with new furnishings, upholstery, lighting, wall coverings, carpeting, ceiling finishes, window treatments and floor coverings. The enhanced colour palette combines sand and marine shades to contrast with the warmth of wood finishes, elevating the look and feel to casual elegance.
Yacht Club (above): the indoor observation area on the top deck will become a chic coffee bar and lounge where guests enjoy espresso, sandwiches and pastries while relaxing with a good book, exploring their iPads with wifi or just watching the coastline as they sail to the next destination. The area will receive a complete overhaul, with new Amtico® flooring, furniture, and an open layout that embraces the view.

Compass Rose: the club space will turn into Windstar’s popular Compass Rose, redesigned with all new contemporary furnishings, including rich new flooring finishes, plantation shutters, and comfortable chairs and bar stools designed for socializing. Live music can be found here nightly.

Reception: this area will be refreshed with new panelling, light fixtures and wall coverings. An additional desk for guests to consult with the destination manager and guest service manager will also be added.

Star Bar: the outdoor deck bar will offer casual drinks during the day and a venue for star-gazing by night. The bar area will be expanded with teak decking, new stools, and lighting.

Dining Venues: all restaurants will be transformed to embrace Windstar’s casual elegance, where guests are free to eat when, where, and with whom they please (no jackets or ties required). All dining experiences are complimentary.

AmphorA: Windstar’s formal dining experience will be introduced as AmphorA Restaurant. The main dining room will be redesigned, featuring mirror panels with Murano glass, new soft lighting, wall coverings and artwork. The room will feature a new seating layout; setting the stage for Windstar’s signature dining experience featuring contemporary, international menus and fresh, local dishes.

Veranda/Candles: the restaurant in the aft of the yacht will be an inviting buffet during the day, with plentiful outdoor seating highlighting Veranda’s new look – the perfect spot for breakfast and lunch alfresco. At night, the venue will transform to Candles Grill, a favourite Windstar romantic experience where guests can dine with table service under the stars.

Suites: all 106 will be renovated to showcase new furnishings, leather headboards, plush sofas and chairs, curtains, new lighting features, plush carpeting, new artwork, stylish bed cushions and luxurious bed throws. The suites will feature a warm colour palette that embraces comfort and relaxation.

Destination Suites: the Owner’s Suites will now showcase different, unique Windstar destinations, such as the Bora Bora Suite. Guests can get a taste of one of the hidden harbours that Windstar sails to, all in the comfort of their suite.

New Year, New World of Cruising!

The brand new re-launch edition of World of Cruising magazine is due for publication next week, and it's time to reveal everything in store for Europe's leading and longest-running cruise publication.

First of all, as Time Spent At Sea readers will already know, we have new owners in the shape of Real Response Media, with ambitious plans to take the magazine to a whole new level in terms of profile, design and content. Among their initial innovations are SIX issues a year (instead of four), and a glossy year-end Cruise Directory, which will provide a comprehensive list of every cruise line and every ship, as well as providing a preview of the year ahead.

We also have a sharp new design team, who have revamped the look and style of our pages in keeping with the promise of a New Year. There are new columnists and new features, including some eye-catching destination stories that are sure to have you saying ‘I want to go THERE!’ like our Cover Story on Alaska (above).

We also feature an update on the Queen Elizabeth of Cunard and a full review of 2013's new Europa 2 of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, and take a unique river journey on the Spirit of Chartwell with Titan Tours on the River Douro in Portugal.

For adventure-cruise fans, we travel to Norway with our blogger-in-chief Steve Newman, while for a mouth-watering cruise cuisine feature we feature Windstar Cruises

New features include Three Of A Kind - a special look at a trio of regional ports, in this case A Coruna, Bilbao and Santander of Spain's Costa Verde - and Being There, which is a photo highlight of a current 'hot' cruise destination, in this case the Canary Islands. And, following on from there, Where Next is a view of an up-and-coming port of call, with our first one taking a look at Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

For new columnists, we have Andy Harmer, the Director of CLIA UK & Ireland, and Silver Travel Advisor, the essential website for mature traveller advice.

Our features line-up is also more obviously demarcated, so readers can immediately see the difference between our Ocean, River, Adventure and Luxury cruising sections, as well as enjoying a new-look News section, which remains the market leader in cruise terms. Our essential Cruise Planner remains a part of the mix, though.

If that is the Big Picture in our wide World of Cruising, there is a huge amount of detail to follow, and we are sure you are going to want to stay with us for the full voyage. More and more people will be seeing our publication as the whole story of cruising goes widescreen and technicolour this year, with new ships, new places to see and new ways to see them.

No-one has our cruise know-how or our depth of cruise knowledge, and no-one provides the unparalleled range of stories and insight that we do. It all starts anew with Issue 61, so make sure you’re aboard! This is your Captain, setting sail…

Windstar's New Pride For Europe

Windstar Cruises has announced the name for the first of its three new, all-suite, power yachts as Star Pride (above), launching in May of 2014.

Windstar, who acquired the three 10,000-ton vessels from Seabourn Cruise Line, will place newcomer Star Pride in Europe for its first season, offering exciting new voyages which open for bookings on May 14. The names of the additional two yachts will be announced in the coming weeks.

Star Pride and the additional two yachts will fit perfectly into Windstar’s intimate, yacht-style cruising by offering a small-ship luxury cruise with 300 passengers or less in a casually elegant style going to places bigger ships cannot go,” said Hans Birkholz, Windstar’s chief executive officer. “We are thrilled to now be able to offer even more intriguing choices in Europe for the 2014 season.”

The addition of the new yachts is part of Global Windstar, the line’s fleet expansion and new product development initiative. Increasing the size of the fleet enables the line to cruise a global set of itineraries to new destinations, such as Wind Spirit’s much anticipated return to Tahiti and Star Pride’s European voyage collection, which will include new destinations, such as a voyage in the Black Sea. Future options will include opportunities to visit Asia and South America.

The new 'power yachts' are identical, with a guest capacity of 212 each in 106 suites. As the trio enter the fleet, they will all undergo a Windstar branded renovation to add signature experiences, including the line’s famous deck barbecue, the open Bridge policy, and the celebrated sail-away party.

Following the May 2014 introduction of Star Pride, Windstar will take possession of the additional two yachts in April and May 2015, to start sailing in May following their dry-dock period.

Court Approves Sale of Windstar

Ambassadors International Inc. has announced the U.S. Bankruptcy Court has approved the sale of substantially all of Ambassadors’ assets, including its principal operating unit, Windstar Cruises, to TAC Cruise LLC, an affiliate of Xanterra Holding Corporation. The sale is expected to close next week.

All of Windstar’s luxury yachts are still sailing as scheduled, and the handover to the new owners is not expected to interrupt future bookings.

During a court-supervised competitive bidding process in compliance with Section 363 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, TAC Cruise LLC submitted a winning bid of $39 million in cash.

Windstar will now be operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Xanterra Holding Corporation of Greenwood Village, CO. Xanterra Holding Corporation and its affiliates have operated in the hospitality and leisure industry for more than 100 years.

“Windstar emerged as a tremendous long-term opportunity due to the line’s exceptional product, loyal following and high level of guest satisfaction in the luxury travel market,” said Andrew N. Todd, CEO of Xanterra Holding Corporation. “Xanterra intends to maintain Windstar’s business and operations and to invest in Windstar’s growth following the close of the sale.”

Hans Birkholz, CEO of Ambassadors and Windstar, said: “Windstar is very pleased with the successful outcome of this sale process and expects to complete it by early next week. Windstar is excited to have its new owner join in building Windstar’s world class brand. Windstar will be well-positioned for long-term profitability and success under new ownership and we will continue to provide exceptional service and extraordinary luxury travel experiences for our guests.”

However, it is expected that Ambassadors’ stockholders and holders of Ambassadors’ convertible notes will not receive any distribution following the sale and these securities will likely have little, if any, value following Ambassadors’ Chapter 11 proceeding.

More Degrees from Windstar

WINDSTAR CRUISES INTRODUCES THE NEXT PHASE OF ITS DEGREES OF DIFFERENCE INITIATIVE
** Adding Amenities and Enhancements to Fleet **
Windstar Cruises, has announced to the UK marketplace the latest phase of its ‘Degrees of Difference’ initiative, featuring added amenities and enhancements to its ships, which will be implemented in stages, looking to completion in Summer 2010.

“The next phase of the ‘Degrees of Difference’ initiative will take the ship to a new degree of excellence,” said Diane Moore, president of Windstar Cruises. “Our guests enjoy fine dining, luxurious accommodations, outstanding service, dream destinations and the feeling that they are sailing on their own private yacht. We have both listened to our guests’ wishes and anticipated their discerning needs. With these latest initiatives, we look forward to delivering an experience that continues to raise the bar.”

These new initiatives to be implemented include:

Fine Dining
The Restaurant menus on all three ships will be reinvigorated with innovative new dishes from land and sea, bringing the flavours of the world to guest plates. This unique culinary dining experience will reflect flavours of the destinations that the Windstar fleet visits.

Wind Surf’s alternative restaurant ‘Degrees’ will feature a new rotating menu reflecting the fresh and seasonal preparations of Mediterranean cooking. Other dining enhancements include the addition of a spa dining menu and redesigned menu holders with sleek and elegant lines.

Fine Wines
Wind Surf’s Yacht Club will be transformed into a contemporary wine bar, featuring a selection of luscious California, Washington, Oregon, New Zealand and Australian wines by the glass. On each ship, during each sailing, guests will be able to indulge in special wine tastings featuring crystal stemware by Riedel and led by a sommelier.

Spa Suite Accommodations
For those looking for a retreat for the mind, body and soul, Windstar will introduce relaxing spa suites on Wind Surf. Spa suites will feature special bedding and linens, spa amenities, and credits for certified organic spa services and fitness classes in WindSpa provided by The OnboardSpa Company’s O SPA London.

Relaxation and Fitness Enhancements
All guests will be able to enjoy new rejuvenating poolside spa treatments that will take pampering to a whole new level. From December Spa reservations will be bookable in advance online at www.windstarcruises.com.

Wind Surf’s Fitness Centre and Wind Star and Wind Spirit’s Gyms will receive new state-of-the-art fitness equipment.

Inspired Activities
Water sports enthusiasts appreciate the up-close and personal views of the world’s most dramatic coastlines with Windstar’s complimentary waterskiing, windsurfing, sailing, ski-tubing and kayaking from the ship’s aft Marina Deck. Windstar will also be investing in new watersports equipment on all three ships.

The ships’ library DVD collection of feature films has been expanded along with travel, adventure and discovery favorites for guests to use in their staterooms.

This year Windstar’s Signature Collection Host Series returned by popular demand, allowing guests the opportunity to travel with luminaries in the world of food, wine, photography, art and sports. Windstar will continue to offer the programme in 2010 and beyond and will also add enrichment and port lectures on sailings.

Personalized Shore Excursions
Earlier this year, Windstar launched its exclusive Concierge Collection of Shore Excursions, designed to appeal to guests who were looking for extraordinary experiences in Europe and celebrating these destinations in a special way—limited to small groups of 6 to 25 guests. Expanding on this concept and offering personalized service, Windstar will arrange private shore excursions and customized pre- and post-cruise packages for guests. Windstar will also add personal iPod Discovery Walks in Italy, Croatia, France, Greece, Monaco, Portugal and Spain where guests enjoy a guided tour of the destination on an iPod.

Windstar operates a three-ship fleet of deluxe motor-sail yachts combining the magic of sailing under sail with quiet, state of the art engines. The intimate size of the ships, carrying just 148 – 312 passengers, exudes a private yacht-like atmosphere, with no fixed meal times or dress code and a choice of restaurants – including Candles al fresco grill. The size of the ships also affords access to small bays and ports that larger ships cannot reach, allowing guests to explore more secluded spots.
