Enjoy a unique expedition voyage along the coast of Norway on MS Finnmarken

Hurtigruten has combined many of the elements of its coastal and explorer programmes for a one-off winter expedition voyage on MS Finnmarken. A dedicated expedition team will be on-board the ship to enhance the experience and deliver a programme of activities above that normally offered on the coastal voyage.

The 12-day voyage will follow the traditional Hurtigruten coastal route, departing from Bergen on 7 December, before sailing along the picturesque Norwegian coast to Kirkenes near the Russian border – from where the voyage back to Bergen begins.

Guests will have the chance to enjoy all of the activities currently offered on coastal voyages, but with a huge array of additional sea and land-based activities, a trip to the North Cape, talks by guest lecturers and numerous hikes.

While on board you can hear Pål Brekke (a solar physicist from the Norwegian Space Centre) giving a lecture on the fascinating Aurora Borealis, or join one of the other daily talks by the expedition team. 

Prices start from £849pp and includes the voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes and back to Bergen on full board basis in an inside cabin, North Cape excursion, hikes, lectures and a Helly Hansen fleece jacket. Flight and transfer packages are available from an additional £330 per person.

Un-Cruise Unveils Heritage Adventures

Launching this August, Un-Cruise Adventures’ 88-guest S.S. Legacy sails back through history bringing alive the stories and characters from Alaska’s Gold Rush of ’98 and the Lewis and Clark Expedition westward through Oregon and Washington.

Cruise Miss Takes A Day Visit To 'Norway'

Our special guest blogger Danielle Fear, aka Cruise Miss, provides a fascinating look at the MS Fram of one of our favourite cruise lines, Norway's Hurtigruten, during a day visit at Port of Tyne.

I knew she was small but, as we drove towards the terminal, I couldn’t see anything that resembled a ship. Finally, she peeked out from behind the apartment building that sits directly in front of the dock and I could breathe a sigh of relief.

At just 11,647 tons and taking only 318 passengers, MS Fram may well be small but she is the perfect sized explorer vessel in my eyes.

The chief purser introduced himself and said if I needed anything to make my way back to the front desk where they would assist me, otherwise I was free to explore as I wished. Perfect! I do like guided ship tours but sometimes, especially on a vessel this size, it’s nice to break free and explore at your own pace.

The front desk was located on Deck 4 and offered a rather pleasant seating area. The space was open but the seating was arranged in such a manner as to make it feel like you had your own square living room. One of the sections even had a TV imitating a burning fire on the wall which created a lovely feel - only to be outshone by the floor-to-ceiling windows and an unspoilt view across the ocean.

To the left there was a bistro, small shop and buffet area and to the right a small internet section and some function rooms.

As I made my way back to the other end of the ship I found the Imaq Dining Room, right aft and offering beautiful panoramic views. The tables were prepared and there was a large buffet station in the centre of the room. I was told they do a mixture of buffet dining and waiter service, varying per evening.

On Deck 7 the first door I came across led directly into the gym where I was  greeted by a space larger than anticipated. It was still small, of course, but it felt generous for the ship's size. There was more than enough equipment to keep fitness enthusiasts happy, including treadmills, exercise bikes, ping-pong table, weights and a rowing machine. The door at the back led out on to a small deck area which was home to two bubbling hot tubs.

The pleasant sun deck aft was equipped with numerous tables and chairs and, to my surprise, two huge chimney BBQ’s. Going up to the observation deck, I can only imagine what cruising through the Polar Regions on this ship must be like. It truly is designed for exploring and not missing a thing - rarely is your view obstructed from anywhere on board.

Now it was time to view some cabins and I entered number 539, the Thorvald Nilsen cabin. And what a cabin it was - everything was fitted with a dark wood yet with enough light from the huge window to avoid making it feel small, while the bathroom was one of the nicest I have seen on any ship. There was a large wardrobe space and then a small seating area with TV. This clearly was a high grade of cabin. I did view another, an inside, and the décor contrast was quite different, but it was still spacious and comfortable.

My visit to MS Fram was certainly something different; after all, she is an expedition ship built to explore not entertain with numerous bars, clubs and lounges. She was extremely modern and every crew member I had the pleasure of passing greeted me with a genuine smile and a hearty hello. I chatted with a few passengers and all seemed very happy on board; one couple even said it was their fourth time on the ship, so they clearly enjoy what she has to offer.

She certainly left me hoping I can also experience an expedition voyage one, so, in that sense, she has certainly done her job!

To The End Of The World With Hurtigruten

Journey to ‘the end of the world’ this year and visit the magnificent North Cape - Hurtigruten’s best-selling excursion. More than 54,000 guests took a trip to the famous rock plateau in 2012, making it the top-selling excursion once again.

Hurtigruten guests flocked to the northernmost point of Europe on both the ‘North Cape’ (from £98pp) and ‘Breakfast at the North Cape’ (from £129pp) excursions, with the natural attraction being the spectacular plateau that rises a dramatic 307metres straight up from the Arctic Ocean. 

The North Cape and Hurtigruten have always been closely linked. After the  shipping company expanded the route all the way to Kirkenes in the early 20th century, just a few years after its foundation 120 years ago, the ships also started to pass the North Cape and passengers could admire the famous rock plateau the ship. Later, after completion of the road to the North Cape Plateau in the 1950s, the trip to the North Cape was included in shore excursion programmes. Its appeal has remained untarnished ever since.

Tromsø, Norway’s biggest city north of the Arctic Circle, also proved a major draw for guests, with almost 21,000 of them attending the ‘Midnight Concert in the Arctic Cathedral’ (from £44pp), the second best-selling excursion. In third was the ‘Taste of Vesteralen’ tour (from £64pp), with more than 17,000 participants. This tour explores the beautiful and dramatic scenery of the Vesterålen islands on the diverse bus tour from Harstad to Sortland.

However, Hurtigruten guests have a wide and diverse excursion programme to choose from, whatever their itinerary. For example, a total of 45 excursions are offered on the 12-day Classic Round Voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes. The maximum number and selection depends on the time of year.

Rare Voyages On Aranui

The Aranui is the only ship to sail the 2,200 mile round-trip from Papeete to all six inhabited Marquesa islands, making it a lifeline to the outside world for their people. The 14-night voyage to the most remote archipelago in the world follows in the wake of Prince William and Kate, as well as famous artist, Paul Gauguin, author of Moby Dick, Herman Melville, and Robert Louis Stevenson, all of whom were inspired by the beauty of French Polynesia.

Discover The Irrawaddy With Zegrahm

G Adventures’ New Polar Expeditions

Demand for repeat expedition visits has led G Adventures to launch two new itineraries to the southernmost continent on board its expedition vessel M/S Expedition. Both itineraries are featured in G Adventures’ new 2013 Polar Expeditions brochure, which is available now.

Hurtigrten's Short-Break Programme

Hurtigruten Launches Amazing Excursion Programme

Fancy exploring ice caves inside the Longyear Glacier? Or riding a ‘Dog Cart’, a dog sled on wheels? Or perhaps snowmobiling in the Arctic Desert? All this and much more is now possible with Hurtigruten’s new short-break land programme to Spitsbergen. Noble Caledonia's Galapagos Adventures

Following on from yesterday's blog about G Adventures' latest offerings in the Galapagos, here is another very timely story of the same destination, this time from Noble Caledonia.

Named after the giant Galapagos tortoise (above), this remote group of islands, 1,000km off the coast of Ecuador, are considered some of the most wondrous islands in the world. Just Call Them Un-Cruise Adventures

Marking another milestone in its 16-year evolution, adventure cruise line InnerSea Discoveries/American Safari Cruises has officially changed its name to Un-Cruise Adventures. The line operates seven boats carrying 22-88 guests in Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico’s Sea of Cortés, Columbia and Snake Rivers and Coastal Washington and British Columbia. 

“We’ve experienced phenomenal growth and success over the last four years,” said Dan Blanchard, principal and CEO. “What began as yacht cruising under the American Safari Cruises name has now expanded to include more styles of Un-Cruise Adventures, and this name change reflects that growth.”

The company has three expedition vessels, 60-guest Wilderness Adventurer, 76-guest Wilderness Discoverer and 76-guest Wilderness Explorer, offering Active Adventures for those desiring more outdoor explorations at a lower price point. Three yachts offer Luxury Adventures, 22-guest Safari Quest, 36-guest Safari Explorer and 86-guest Safari Endeavour, an inclusive, upscale experience along with adventure activities. The 88-guest Safari Legacy, a replica Victorian steamer, debuts in August 2013 and will offer inclusive Heritage Adventures focusing on Living History aboard and ashore through presentations and tours. Charter Adventures are also offered on all boats.

In 2013, Safari Legacy begins operating in Alaska and then sails on the Columbia and Snake Rivers in fall and spring. It debuts Heritage Adventures, a new style of Un-Cruise Adventure, with a focus on Living History aboard and ashore. In November, Wilderness Explorer will begin sailing Active Adventures in the Hawaiian Islands between Oahu and Hawaii, the Big Island.  And three Alaska Unleashed departures are scheduled for the Wilderness Adventurer in Alaska for adventurers desiring an amped up week of high adventure.

Moving forward, all company materials will change to reflect the new name of Un-Cruise Adventures. The company’s website URL will change to www.un-cruise.com.
