What New Ship Are You Most Looking Forward To In 2014?

OK, the big poll question is on - there are four major new vessels arriving in 2014, and we want to know which one YOU most like the look of.

We have set up a brand new poll, on our home page (top right), and all readers can vote on one of the four selections, to show the 'Most Anticipated' newcomer of the New Year.

Here are the four contenders:

Norwegian Getaway: the second of the Breakaway class for Norwegian Cruise Line, this will be a similar 146,000 tons and with 4,000 passengers (double occupancy). It arrives in Miami in February and, like her 2013 sister, will feature Waterfront dining, the grand Tropicana Room restaurant and entertainment centre, and award-winning live entertainment, including Burn The Floor and the Wine Lovers musical. It is a glitzy, high-energy package, and it all comes with Norwegian's Freestyle ethos where passengers are not scheduled into a daily routine.

Regal Princess: another follow-up to a proven 2013 success story, Regal follows in the wake of Royal Princess and will make her debut for Princess Cruises in the Mediterranean in May. It will feature casual dining options like the charming Italian-inspired Gelateria and trendy Ocean Terrace Seafood Bar, plus enhancements to passenger favourites like the International Café and Alfredo’s Pizzeria. At 141,000 tons and with 3,600 passengers, it continues the mega-ship trend but with significant refinements, like the expanded Atrium, with its social hub and multiple dining outlets.

Costa Diadema: this will be Costa Cruises' first new ship for two years and is a new design from anything previous, boasting an impressive array of seven restaurants and no less than 15 bars. It weighs in at an Italian cruise ship record 132,500 tons, carrying 3,700 passengers and will feature an immense Samsara Spa and a 4-D Cinema, amongst a wealth of entertainment options. Music fans will be well catered for with a major Disco and a Country Rock Club, while the pool deck will offer a sliding glass roof and a huge video screen. The ship is due to arrive in October.

Quantum of the Seas: the latest offering from Royal Caribbean in November will be an all-
new format featuring some of the most popular features of their gigantic Oasis-class duo and the smaller Freedom class. Plus it will add add some truly novel attractions like the North Star observation capsule to lift passengers 300ft above sea level, the unique Two70 - panoramic lounge by day, spectacular show centre at night - and the SeaPlex recreation room, offering roller-blading, bumper cars and sports court. There will be no shortage of Wow moments once aboard, but it is also the biggest ship of the year at 167,800 tons and carrying 4,180 passengers.

OK, those are the runners and riders - now give us your vote!

More Britannia - Behind The Design

P&O Cruises have been quick to ratchet up the publicity campaign for their forthcoming new ship Britannia, which is due for its maiden voyage in Spring 2015.

Earlier this month (on December 5, in fact), they released their first 'Making Of' video teaser, with a special behind-the-scenes look at the design and construction process, and it proved an immediate hit with British cruise-goers. We featured it here on Time Spent At Sea and it drew hundreds of pageviews (see it on this link).

So, with that in mind, here comes Part 2 of the 'Britannia - Behind The Design' series, with another two and a half minute video that reveals lots of new facts, images and illustrations of Britannia from designers Richmond International.

What to watch out for in Episode 2:

  • Atrium – with its wow-factor starburst central feature, three-storey spiral staircase, wide open space, furniture, colour schemes and a totally decadent look and feel
  • Spa – P&O's biggest yet; see the treatments rooms, hydrotherapy pool, relaxation and reception areas
  • Ultra modern cabins with contemporary bathrooms
  • Deck areas – see the pools, the various levels, layout and imagine yourself on those sun loungers!

Britannia will be the largest ship ever built for the British cruise business, at 141,000 tons and carrying 3,600 passengers. Her maiden voyage has yet to be revealed but P&O promise another big announcement in February.

Their latest video is also hosted on the P&O Cruises YouTube channel and can be seen direct on this link (if the above doesn't work):

Viking's Big Med Moments

Viking Cruises has announced a full schedule of 2015 Mediterranean itineraries for the new Viking Star, as well as select 2016 sailings, to highlight their maiden year of ocean cruising.

The move will keep debut ship Viking Star in the Mediterranean, offering additional sailings to some of Europe’s most beautiful and historic cities, from Rome to Barcelona. Responding to the overwhelming demand for the ship's maiden voyages in the Mediterranean offered earlier for the spring and summer of 2015, the new winter cruises will allow guests the chance to explore the vibrant cultures and sites along the Mediterranean in the quiet season, in keeping with Viking’s promise to provide a unique cruise experience. Due to the popularity of the nearly-sold out 2015 maiden voyages, select 2016 itineraries are now also available for booking.

“We are pleased to announce additional cruises in the Mediterranean that will allow guests to experience some of the most beautiful cities in Europe during the quiet season the way the locals do,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking Cruises. “Our Mediterranean ocean itineraries have sold at an unprecedented rate; consumers are responding enthusiastically to this attractive region and the carefully-designed itineraries that offer our guests the opportunity to explore this historically fascinating region by letting them get closer to the historical sites, people and traditions in ways they have never experienced before.”

New Mediterranean Itineraries

The overwhelming popularity of Viking Star’s maiden voyages resulted in the addition of the winter 2015 Mediterranean itineraries. By highlighting more unique locations, such as Malta, Sicily, Sardinia, and Algiers – and crafting experiences that take advantage of the post-tourist season – the new itineraries showcase the Mediterranean in a way many travellers have never witnessed. By sailing in the winter months, guests will see an entirely different Europe – quieter and more contemplative, all while soaking up the splendour of the region.

Romantic Mediterranean (8 days; Barcelona-Rome): While sailing along some of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, this itinerary offers a perfect mix of glamour, rustic pleasures and memorable landscapes with visits to Toulon, Corsica and Monte Carlo; the Tuscan region of Italy; plus overnights in Barcelona and Rome. Introductory 2-for-1 pricing starts at $1,999 per person with discounted airfares from $595pp.

Mediterranean Getaway (8 days; Rome-Barcelona): Explore historically significant sites and vibrant cities of the southern Mediterranean with destinations that include Rome, Naples (and Pompeii), Sicily and Sardinia; Tunis (and Carthage); and Palma de Mallorca, Valencia and Barcelona. Introductory 2-for-1 pricing starts at $1,999 per person with discounted airfares from $595pp.

Mediterranean Explorer (15 days; Barcelona-Barcelona): Combining the Romantic Mediterranean and Mediterranean Getaway, this itinerary features fabled ancient cities, medieval wonders and iconic sites that include Toulon, Monte Carlo and Corsica; Tuscany, Naples (and Pompeii), Sicily and Sardinia; Tunis (and Carthage); Palma de Mallorca and Valencia; plus overnights in Barcelona and Rome. Introductory 2-for-1 pricing starts at $3,849 per person with discounted airfares from $595pp.

Grand Mediterranean Tour (15 days; Barcelona-Barcelona): Sun-kissed shores and new places to discover await on this voyage that begins with an overnight in Barcelona and includes an overnight in Rome. Stops include Monte Carlo, Toulon and Corsica; Tuscany and Sardinia; Tunis; and Valencia; plus off-the-beaten path visits to Valletta, Malta, and Algiers, Algeria. Introductory 2-for-1 pricing starts at $3,849 per person with discounted airfares from $595pp.

Viking’s Ocean Cruises

Last May, Viking Cruises announced the launch of its ocean cruise product line, which will begin sailing in May 2015 with the brand-new 928-passenger Viking Star embarking her maiden voyages in Scandinavia and the Baltic. Then she will also sail in the Western and Eastern Mediterranean. The launch affirmed Viking's continued commitment to providing unique cruising journeys for the experienced traveller. Since announcing itineraries for the 2015 Viking Star maiden voyages, cabins have sold at a rapid rate, due to overwhelming interest in Viking’s small-ship, destination-focused ocean cruises.

Booking Details

For more details, visit www.vikingcruises.com/oceans. From now until December 18, Viking is offering a 2015 & 2016 Early Booking Discount with up to 2-for-1 cruise pricing and up to $2,000 per couple off air. Viking’s inclusive pricing covers accommodations, all onboard meals, a guided excursion in each port of call, port charges, complimentary wine, beer and soft drinks with onboard dinner and lunch service, and more.

Get Ready For A Dining Delight On Royal Princess

The latest info on the new Royal Princess from Princess Cruises (which has its maiden voyage on June 16) gives us even more reason to relish the arrival of this dramatic newcomer to the cruise ranks, with an alternative dining delight in prospect.

In addition to its many main restaurant options, Royal Princess will feature a wide selection of casual eateries where passengers can grab a snack or enjoy a relaxed meal. The expanded atrium will offer a variety of choices, including Alfredo’s pizzeria (above), the new Ocean Terrace seafood bar, and the International Café. Those with a sweet tooth can enjoy ice cream and crepes at Gelato, while tea lovers can enjoy the new Tea Tower. The poolside Trident Grill will transform into a traditional smokehouse barbecue in the evenings and the Outrigger Bar will feature a range of margaritas accompanied by made-to-order Mexican dishes.

In addition, the ship’s Horizon Court buffet will be transformed with fresh new options. Live stations serving regional delicacies, evening speciality options such as a crab shack and fondue restaurant, expanded seating and, for the first time on Princess Cruises, a dedicated pastry shop. More details on these choices include:

Alfredo’s – Serving up fresh, hand-tossed Neapolitan-style pizzas hot out of the oven, Alfredo’s has become a passenger favourite since its debut on Grand Princess in 2011. On Royal Princess, the sit-down restaurant’s complimentary menu will be expanded to include a variety of Italian antipasti, soups and salads, calzone, pizza baguettes and delicious baked pastas in addition to desserts. Alfredo’s will offer more spacious seating and an open kitchen where passengers can watch as chefs craft the best pizza at sea.

Gelato – Just one deck below, this new gelateria offers a variety of Italian-inspired gelato and ice cream creations. Passengers can have their chosen flavours in a waffle cone or ice cream sandwich. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic sundaes will be available, as well as sweet crespelle with a choice of either nutty banana or spiced apple filling. Or passengers can indulge in a classic banana split - or a pineapple split for an old favourite with a new twist.

International Café – This Princes signature venue will be serving up some new savoury and sweet items, including cupcakes, pies, muffins, pastries, panini sandwiches, fresh-baked cookies and speciality coffees. In addition, a new variety of hot sandwiches with international flavours will be available, including Cuban sandwiches and Mexican tortas. The space will have an expanded seating area, making it perfect to grab a light meal, meet friends for coffee or enjoy a snack while watching the entertainers in the Piazza.

Outrigger Bar – This top-deck bar celebrates throughout the day and includes a margarita bar starting at lunch time, accompanied by made-to-order burritos, fresh tortilla chips with guacamole and Mexican salsa to keep the fiesta going into the night.

The 'Fairytale Ship' Completes Sea Trials

Costa Favolosa, the new Costa Cruises flagship, has successfully completed her official sea trials. The ship, the 15th in Costa’s fleet, completed her first crossing during which tests were conducted to verify the correct operation of the various systems, equipment and engines.

During the tests at sea, Favolosa was brought up to her maximum speed (more than 23 knots or 40km/h) which was maintained for eight consecutive hours to test the ship’s endurance. There was also a “crash stop”, meaning a complete stop at maximum speed to determine in how many metres the ship comes to a stop during an emergency.

During the test known as the “UMS”, Favolosa sailed for six straight hours only using the automatic energy and propulsion system controls. Finally, with the “blackout” test, the electric power was cut off to check that all ship functions automatically returned to normal when the power was restored.

After completing her trials, the ship returned to the shipyard in Marghera, Italy, to complete the fitting-out of the interiors prior to being placed into active service. Costa Favolosa will be ready for delivery on June 30, while the naming ceremony will take place two days later in Trieste.

Costa Favolosa - The Fairytale Ship

As her name suggests (Favola is Italian for “fairytale”), Favolosa is a veritable “fairytale ship”, a “contemporary enchanted castle” with a perfect combination of fabulous atmosphere and state-of-the-art hi-tech fun. The main innovations on board include:

Six new veranda suites with their own Jacuzzis

A new entertainment area for teenagers with 4D Cinema, PlayStation World, and a bar with ice-cream, drinks and popcorn

A new children’s open-air Aqua Park water playground with its own pirate galleon

The Samsara Spa, one of the largest and most exclusive wellness centres ever built on a cruise ship

A large central lido extending over two decks, with a sliding glass roof and giant movie screen

A Grand Prix driving simulator

A golf simulator

In addition, the shipboard gym will offer all the latest state-of-the-art Technogym equipment, including machines with Internet access, so you can surf the Internet while guests work out.

The brand new pool area will be particularly large and inviting, with 1,000sq m of space dedicated to relaxation and entertainment, 160 sun loungers and whirlpool tubs and an invigorating waterfall.

Costa Favolosa is set to make her debut on a three-day vernissage cruise departing from Venice on July 4, and calling at Dubrovnik (Croatia) and Koper (Slovenia). This will be followed by her grand inaugural cruise on July 7, an 11-day itinerary taking in Greece, Turkey and Croatia with stopovers in Bari, Izmir, Istanbul, Mykonos, Athens, Olympia and Dubrovnik. Throughout the summer, Favolosa will be offering seven-day cruises from Venice and Bari to Olympia, Izmir, Istanbul and Dubrovnik

Dream Dining

After the initial look at the new Disney Dream at Port Canaveral, it was time to spread out a bit further and see what else this grand 128,000-ton colossus had in store.

Our first item on the agenda was lunch, so we headed for the Cabanas restaurant up on Deck 11, an extensive indoor/outdoor buffet option that serves both breakfast and lunch. The style of this venue will come as no surprise to most regular cruise-goers, and, while it is not as cramped as the versions on original ships Disney Magic and Wonder, it is still a bit awkward to negotiate the cafeteria-style serveries. The seating areas are comfortable, though, and space never seemed to be a problem on our cruise (albeit with only around half the full passenger number).

The food choice was also quite wide, albeit a bit thin on the salad side of things. A wonderful blackened mahi-mahi was my top choice, along with an Asian stir-fry. There was also a fresh carvery station and plenty of typical fast-food options to keep the kiddies happy!

Between Cabanas and the main pools is a series of Quick Service Restaurants - Luigi's Pizza, Tow Mater's Grill, Fillmore's Favourites, Frozone Treats and Eye Scream. Nothing startling here, but all good, fresh food, and some very tempting sandwiches and paninis.

The grown-ups can also relax with a speciality coffee or tea, plus a pastry, at the Cove Cafe, which is definitely my idea of a soothing sea-going retreat (their Americano was also absolutely delicious!).

The real dining highlight of the Dream, though, is their unique rotational dining system, whereby families and couples have dinner at one of the three main restaurants each evening, with their serving team accompanying them at each one. Even though we had only two evenings aboard, we managed to sample all three by having breakfast in the Royal Palace, the fairytale-style dining room, with its plushly-upholstered 'throne' chairs and French-themed menu. To my view, this was the least eye-catching of the three, but that is only a relative term for Disney, where everything is so thoroughly themed.

Animator's Palate is the grand 'show' restaurant, a vibrant animation centre where the walls come alive with interactive features such as Turtle Talk with Crush (from the Finding Nemo film), a hilarious chance for kids (and some adults) to 'talk turtle' with the surfer dude from the East Australia Current.

The food style is supposed to be Pacific Rim, but we had a Wild Mushroom risotto, endive salad and Black Cod (me) and Sirloin Salad (Susan), none of which seemed especially 'Pacific' to us. Susan's tomato appetiser was surprisingly poor, with much of the tomato unripe and almost inedible. We may not have made great choices here, though, as most people felt the food in Animator's was among the best on the ship.

Our second night was in the superbly evocative Enchanted Garden, a grand setting 'inspired by the Gardens of Versailles,' and, to my mind, much more romantic and 'fairytale' in its style and theming. A lovely central fountain, gentle mood lighting and superb exterior decor make this a wonderfully different and relaxing dining area, and we also had an excellent dinner here.

My sea bass was beautifully succulent, and I also sampled a side order of the caramelized sea scallops which were positively melt-in-the-mouth good. Susan's marjoram-scented organic chicken was another taste extravaganza, while the lobster ravioli and beet carpaccio appetizers were equally satisfying. Portions were also relatively modest, which we like, and we didn't leave either restaurant feeling we were over-fed.

Desserts were good without being overwhelming (we had cruised most recently on the Crystal Symphony of Crystal Cruises, where desserts are an absolute stand-out feature, hence Disney was up against an impossible comparison standard here), but the little after-dinner petit fours at Enchanted Garden were another minor taste sensation (little cubes of exotic fruit and chocolate fudge).

In keeping with most cruise lines these days, Disney also offers an alternative dining experience at real speciality restaurants (for adults only). Palo is a larger version of the same Italian-themed restaurant on Magic and Wonder, with the addition of an outdoor terrace and bar area. It serves both dinner and an imaginative brunch, both at an additional $20/person surcharge, but it is usually well worth it.

Finally, the 'ultimate' dining option is that offered by Remy (above), Disney's first true gourmet experience. And, if Palo is the five-star option, Remy is six-star-plus, a creation of Michelin-starred French chef Arnaud Lallement and Disney's own uber-chef, Scott Hunnel. Sadly, we didn't get to dine here but we did get the chance to sample a couple of the restaurant's French-inspired dishes, a langoustine in Caesar sauce, and smoked bison, both of which were the kind of deep, palate-pleasing sensations that could easily be dangerously addictive.

The one drawback here is that the Remy cover charge is a whopping $75 per person, easily the most expensive of any alternative dining restaurant at sea, and their five-course wine-tasting menu would add another $99/head to your bill. However, if you look at it as the chance to dine at a 2 Michelin-star restaurant, where you would be unlikely to get change from $200 for a three-course meal, then you are certainly getting value for money here.

It seats just 70 a night (dinner can last up to 3 hours here) and there is a separate pre-bookable dining room for eight, and it also serves the best champagne cocktail in the world as your welcome-to-Remy aperitif - Tattinger champagne with a nip of pear vodka, a touch of dried apricot, half a blueberry and mint. Just sensational. However, if this appeals to you for your first Disney Dream cruise, you will need to book as early as possible, as this is likely to be a sell-out for every night of every cruise for the foreseeable future.

The other feature of Disney dining is the service, which is among the most personable and family-friendly at sea. Our four servers over the 2 evenings were from the Philippines, Jamaica, Scotland and Costa Rica, and all had a great touch that made the occasion memorable. There were a few grumbles from other media that the wait staff hadn't quite got their act together yet, but we never encountered anything less than the typical Disney enthusiastic-but-efficient style.

And, given that this was their first real test, it bodes well for the months and years to come.

OK, that's the low-down on Dream meal-times, stay tuned for more about this amazing ship in the next few days...
