To The End Of The World With Hurtigruten

Journey to ‘the end of the world’ this year and visit the magnificent North Cape - Hurtigruten’s best-selling excursion. More than 54,000 guests took a trip to the famous rock plateau in 2012, making it the top-selling excursion once again.

Hurtigruten guests flocked to the northernmost point of Europe on both the ‘North Cape’ (from £98pp) and ‘Breakfast at the North Cape’ (from £129pp) excursions, with the natural attraction being the spectacular plateau that rises a dramatic 307metres straight up from the Arctic Ocean. 

The North Cape and Hurtigruten have always been closely linked. After the  shipping company expanded the route all the way to Kirkenes in the early 20th century, just a few years after its foundation 120 years ago, the ships also started to pass the North Cape and passengers could admire the famous rock plateau the ship. Later, after completion of the road to the North Cape Plateau in the 1950s, the trip to the North Cape was included in shore excursion programmes. Its appeal has remained untarnished ever since.

Tromsø, Norway’s biggest city north of the Arctic Circle, also proved a major draw for guests, with almost 21,000 of them attending the ‘Midnight Concert in the Arctic Cathedral’ (from £44pp), the second best-selling excursion. In third was the ‘Taste of Vesteralen’ tour (from £64pp), with more than 17,000 participants. This tour explores the beautiful and dramatic scenery of the Vesterålen islands on the diverse bus tour from Harstad to Sortland.

However, Hurtigruten guests have a wide and diverse excursion programme to choose from, whatever their itinerary. For example, a total of 45 excursions are offered on the 12-day Classic Round Voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes. The maximum number and selection depends on the time of year.

Take the 12-day Classic Round Voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes and back. Starting at £1,642pp from April 15 to May 31, the price includes full board on the ship, based on two sharing. Flights are extra and can be booked via Hurtigruten from £450pp.

P&O's New Fly-Cruises For 2014/15

P&O Cruises has launched a new programme of holidays for 2014/15, including new fly-cruise holidays in the Mediterranean for the first time.

The new broader programme of great value holidays on offer for 2014 is available to book from April 8. Highlights include:

• More cabins for solo travellers, including the first single balcony cabins on newly refitted Arcadia.

There will also be more themed cruises, following on from the success of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing series, and cruises with celebrity chefs and wine experts, plus 2014 celebrates the 30^th anniversary of P&O's Music Festivals at Sea.

The Arctic Circle with Hurtigruten

Continuing Steve Newman's 'live' blog on the classic Norwegian coastal cruise with Hurtigruten: 

Well, what a fabulous walk around Trondheim yesterday. The amazing cathedral and the old wooden houses of the old town; the vivid colours of the warehouses now converted into restaurants or studios along the river. Bit of a skating rink with the snow but that just added to the fun! 

Loads of Norwegian school childen got on the ship this morning and they are all desperate to practice their English!

Today we are going to cross the Arctic Circle, marked by a globe on a small islet  near Nesna, and now we're getting into serious Northern Lights country! After a stop at Bodo, we're striking out deep into the Arctic ocean to the Lofoten Islands.

We are due to arrive at Stamsund about 7pm and are then off to a real Viking feast ashore. When we leave the islands, we navigate through the narrow Raftsund Strait and the Troifiord, where we are going to get traditional fishcakes on deck!

That Viking Spirit

Hurtigruten. The very name has a viking ring to it and this cruise has been called the most beautiful on earth. Well that may not quite be true but, if it isn't, it comes a very close second. Norway's coastal scenery is simply breathtaking and, what's more, is ever changing as you soak up this marvellous country.

If you're a dedicated cruiser, though, you are going to have to get into a different mindset. This isn't a cruise about destinations, this is a cruise about being absorbed into a way of life. The Hurtigruten is a cruise line with all the modern amenities but, at the same time, it is an expedition ship and local bus service.

Calling at over 30 ports on its seven day journey, the ship becomes a bus and ferry service for the local communities. People hop on and off to see their relations, carry out business trips or visit the dentist. As the result, the ambiance of the ship changes every day to complement the scenery.

At times, the ship goes through some incredibly narrow passages where you can almost touch the walls of the cliffs either side and your journey will take you from the lush woodlands and pastures of the south to the frozen wilderness of the Arctic. Indeed, you must expect a visit from King Neptune if you have never crossed the Arctic Circle before and be baptised with ice cubes!

The Hurtigruten is a wonderful experience and, depending on when you go, the Northern Lights or the Midnight Sun will stay with you for ever.
