A Nation Of (Holiday) Explorers!

According to the latest research on British holidaying ambitions, we are a nation of explorers. This probably won't come as a major surprise to the many cruise lines that already offer adventure and expedition-style voyages.

But exploration is definitely the key holiday trend for 2014 according to Celebrity Cruises, who say two thirds (65 per cent) of Brits are keen to experience something new on holiday this year.

In addition, Britons are proving their holiday ambition grit with over a third (35 per cent) believing they will be able to tick off their bucket list of top destinations to visit in their lifetime. One in ten think it is likely or very likely that they will experience them all, according to the research from Celebrity.

Brits are keener than ever to venture into the unknown with trips that will exercise the mind, rather than the body. The biggest holiday ambition is to visit a famous site (30 per cent), followed closely by being able to see wildlife (25 per cent) and experience a new culture (18 per cent).

Celebrity commissioned the research ahead of the launch of ‘Ben Fogle’s Great Adventures’ – a series of unique and exclusive shore excursions developed for those keen to add an alternative element to their holiday and really make the most of their time away.

Writer, broadcaster and explorer  Fogle was appointed as Celebrity's ‘Destination Expert’ in 2013 to share his knowledge of the world with the cruise line’s guests and even shape the experiences they have on holiday. From life as a castaway on a Scottish island, to racing across the Antarctic and trekking the Sahara, he is certainly well qualified to advise on adventure and how to add a different dimension to holiday programmes.

The new shore excursion programme includes speedboat rides and snorkelling with salmon in Norway, a gastronomic tour through Sicily, triathlon trails in Croatia and kayaking through the Stockholm archipelago.

Commenting on the survey results, Ben said: “It is really encouraging to see Brits realising  holidays can be more than a break away and an opportunity to try something different. Many are keen to realise their ambitions to take the road less travelled and immerse themselves in new cultures and experiences. With the launch of my Great Adventures, Celebrity Cruises are leading the way in innovative and exclusive shore excursions across the globe that will add a new and exciting dimension to their cruise holidays in 2014 and beyond.”

Snap A Great Smartphone Photo - Win A Cruise With Celebrity!

Following a survey commissioned by Celebrity Cruises that a staggering 67% of people now take pictures on their mobile on holiday, the cruise line has launched a search – alongside worldwide known and award-winning photographers – for the best travel photo ever taken on a smartphone.

Marking this significant change in the photographic landscape, Celebrity is working alongside esteemed photographers Stuart Franklin (Former President of Magnum, who took what is lauded as one of the most iconic images of all time: the World Press photo Award-winning picture of a man defying a tank in Tiananmen Square, China); Ian Berry, Art Wolfe, Massimo Vitali and Oliver Lang to find the best smartphone travel photo ever taken.

The winner will be appointed as Celebrity's ‘Photo Ambassador for 2014’ and embark on a 14-night Scandinavia & Russia cruise next May. Taking in the spell-binding sights of Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, St Petersburg, Berlin and Paris, there will be spectacular scenery and cities for the winner to capture the essence of each destination through their smartphone. As well as the cruise, the winner’s photographs will then be exhibited on the Celebrity Cruises blog.

Five lucky runners-up will be treated to a personal photography tutorial with Franklin on board Celebrity Eclipse in Southampton in Spring 2014, which will include lunch and a tour of the ship.

To enter, simply submit your image via http://www.celebritycruises.co.uk/smartsnaps or via social media, using the hashtag #smartsnaps. Closing date is November 15. For full terms and conditions, visit www.celebritycruises/smartsnaps

The smartsnaps competition coincides with the appointment of writer and broadcaster Ben Fogle as Celebrity's ‘Destination Expert’. An authority on global adventures, Ben will be offering Celebrity guests tips and advice on where to go and what to do in a variety of cities.

Follow In Captain Scott's Footsteps with Orion

A recent BBC documentary, “The Secret of Scott’s Hut”, saw Ben Fogle join an expedition across Antarctica to find Captain Scott’s Hut, frozen in time for a century. The hut was built to support Scott’s 1911 attempt to be the first to the South Pole and was later abandoned together with 10,000 personal, everyday and scientific items.

In January of this year, Orion Expedition Cruises, the leading operator of five-star expedition cruising in the Australasian region, voyaged to Captain Scott’s hut from which he left for the South Pole, never to return. The 106 guests onboard were all lucky enough to enter the hut, which is a perfectly preserved time capsule of Edwardian England with all the tins of provisions in place and the men’s personal items where they left them.

In January 2012, Orion will again offer guests the opportunity to join a Scott & Shackleton’s Centenary voyage, which will cover some of the polar regions famously charted during the first race to the South Pole by pioneering explorers Scott and Shackleton. The Ross Sea coast extends from the ice shelf northwards until it reaches the very tip of Victoria Land and Cape Adare. While in the Ross Sea Region, a variety of opportunistic landings will be attempted, subject to weather conditions.

Joining guests and the specialist Expedition Team onboard Orion will be renowned scientist and media presenter Dr Karl Kruszelnicki. While onboard, Dr Karl will share his wealth of knowledge with guests through a series of fabulously entertaining and witty talks presented in his inimitable style.

Orion Expedition Cruises’ 20-night Scott & Shackleton’s Antarctica departs January 21, 2012, from Bluff, New Zealand, and visits Auckland Islands, Macquarie Island, the Ross Sea Region, Campbell Island and Snares Islands before arriving back into Bluff. Prices are from £14,625 per person, including 20 nights onboard Orion, all meals, entertainment and educational programmes, use of the ship’s sporting equipment and facilities, Zodiac excursions, port and handling charges, tender transfers and government fees and taxes.
