MSC Cruises and LEGO build the fun at sea

MSC Cruises and the LEGO Group have joined forces to create the first-ever LEGO-themed playrooms at sea. The new play areas will debut aboard MSC Armonia, which is currently being lengthened and refitted as part of the cruise line’s £160 million Renaissance Programme.

Further – and larger – LEGO play areas will be included in two vessels (different classes) now being built for MSC Cruises by Fincantieri and STX France, both scheduled for delivery in 2017.  All three ships featured in the LEGO tie-up will have two kids’ clubs – the Mini Club (3-6 years) and Junior Club (7-11 years) - fitted out in the much-loved building brick style.

Guests will get their first chance to see the LEGO play areas when MSC Armonia returns to service on November 19 with an inaugural cruise from Genoa  to the Canary Islands. This winter the ship will operate two alternating seven-night itineraries from Las Palmas, Gran Canaria (Canaries and Madeira & Canaries and Morocco).

Full details of all LEGO-related activity on board MSC Armonia will be included in the event programme delivered to guests each day.

Cross the Atlantic on Anthem of the Seas for £799

Anthem of the Seas

Quantum of the Seas arrives in the UK today for the first – and possibly only – time, ready for a weekend being shown off to and being tested by some of the world’s media and travel trade partners.

Sister ship Anthem of the Seas (above) comes to Southampton in April 2015, and there are already deals on offer for her Transatlantic crossing to New York departing on 27 October.

Fares start at £799 pp for the nine-night cruise (including return flight to the UK) and an additional £299 secures a two-night stay in New York. The lead-in fare is for an inside cabin complete with virtual balcony – a wall-sized screen showing the view outside in real time. Outside cabins start at £899 pp and balconies are from £999.

Some of the other itineraries Anthem will be sailing during summer 2015 include a three-night cruise to Bruges and Le Havre departing 30 April from  £499 pp (ocean view) or £549 (balcony). An eight-night cruise to France and Spain, visiting Vigo, Gijon, Bilbao and Le Havre, departing 22 April, starts at £999 pp. A 13-night cruise to Vigo, Funchal, Lanzarote, Las Palmas and Tenerife, departing 15 September, from £1,699 (ocean view) and £1,899 (balcony).

The Quantum-class vessels are among the most technologically advanced cruise ships in the world, with first-of-a-kind features including dodgem cars, the NorthStar observation pod, a RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator, and robotic bartenders. The ships have also banished traditional main dining rooms and feature so-called Dynamic Dining in a number of themed restaurants.

That 27 October departure could be the last time we see Anthem in the UK - at present there are no plans for the ship to return to Europe. Details from Iglu Cruise  0208 544 6620.

Balmoral's New Horizons In 2015

We know ex-UK cruises are really popular with our readers at World of Cruising (and here at Time Spent At Sea), and we are always keen, therefore, to highlight new opportunities to enjoy a good quality, no-fly cruise experience.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines are among the leading purveyors of cruises round-trip from British ports, and they have just unveiled a selection of new 2015 itineraries for their classic ship Balmoral, which should have signficant appeal and are on sale now.

The new cruises include top-rated ports, exciting new destinations and an even greater number of shore excursions than ever before. Guests who book the new itineraries can also upgrade to Fred. Olsen’s ‘all-inclusive’ drinks package from just £10 per person, per night, and relax in the knowledge almost everything is already paid for.

Here are two top examples:

Balmoral’s six-night France and Spain cruise from Southampton on August 2, 2015: This sunshine cruise will take guests to Getxo, Hendaye and La Pallice, where they can explore quaint towns, relax on beautiful beaches or sample local wines at one of the traditional vineyards. Prices start from £539 per person.

Balmoral’s 13-night ‘Canaries Perseid Meteor Shower’ cruise from Southampton on August 8, 2015: This exciting 'experiential' cruise will give guests the opportunity to view the stunning, multi-coloured Perseid Meteor Shower at the optimum time, whilst visiting the beautiful Canary Islands, Portugal and Madeira. The ship will call at Lisbon, Santa Cruz for an overnight stay, Las Palmas, San Sebastian and Funchal. Prices start from £899 per person.

Prices for these cruises are based on two adults sharing an inside, twin cabin, and include accommodation, all meals and entertainment on board, and port taxes.

MSC Introduces The Canary Islands

As the British winter slowly settles in, why not escape to sunnier climes with MSC Cruises? The Mediterranean cruise line is now offering the choice between two itineraries in the Canary Islands departing from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the largest island in the archipelago, from just £449pp for a seven-night cruise, including flights. And now is the time to book to benefit from this incredible offer - and ensure some vital vitamin D!

With calls in Las Palmas, San Sebastian, Funchal and Santa Cruz de Palma, MSC Armonia's (above) first itinerary explores the best of the Canaries, including great shopping and beach opportunities as well as blissful encounters with nature at its best. Highlights include the National Park Caldera de Taburiente in La Palma, home of one of the biggest craters in the world, and Las Cañadas, the famous circular mountain range in Tenerife.

In addition to ports of call in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, La Palma and Lanzarote, Armonia’s second itinerary also includes stopovers in two of Morocco’s iconic cities, Casablanca and Agadir, where guests will be able to visit sacred mosques and magical souks but also take the chance to travel further afield to the vibrant city of Marrakech. In Agadir, Morocco's surfers' paradise, pleasure seekers can relax on the beach whilst the more adventurous can venture off into the region's stunning surroundings, the majestic Anti-Atlas mountains and awe-inspiring Sahara desert.

The two itineraries can also be easily combined to offer guests an exceptional 14-night voyage.

See The 'Stars’ With Fred. Olsen

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines will be offering guests the chance to take in one of nature’s most spectacular light shows, the Perseid Meteor Showers, with Braemar’s 13-night Canary Islands voyage sailing from Dover on next August.

This exciting 'experience' cruise will give guests the opportunity to view the stunning, multi-coloured Perseid Meteor Shower at the optimum time, whilst visiting the beautiful Canary Islands and Portugal. The Perseids are so-called because the point from which they appear to come, called the ‘radiant’, lies within the constellation of Perseus.

Referred to by many as 'Nature’s celestial firework display', the ‘Perseid Meteor Showers are the result of material falling from the tail of the comet Swift-Tuttle. Best seen during the early evenings and nightfall within the first two weeks of August, guests on this cruise can channel their ‘amateur astronomist’ as they look out for these 'shooting stars' – which reach a rate of 60 or more per hour at their peak – in stunning surroundings.

Departing on August 4 from Dover, this cruise visits Funchal, on the lovely ‘Garden Isle’ of Madeira, for an overnight stay and then Santa Cruz in Tenerife. Braemar then calls at the largest island, Gran Canaria, where the ship docks in Las Palmas. This popular island boasts a fascinating history; in Plaza Santa Ana, there are bronze statues of dogs, referencing the Romans’ naming of the islands after legendary canines.

Arrecife, Lanzarote, is the next port of call, a bustling port with two splendid castles overlooking the harbour area. Lisbon, Portugal’s bustling capital, is the final port of call.

Prices for this ‘cruise of a lifetime’ start from £1,099 per person, based on two adults sharing a twin-bedded, inside cabin, Grade ‘I’, and include accommodation, all meals and entertainment on board, and port dues.

More Info: visit the website at www.fredolsencruises.com or call 0800 0355 150 (Monday to Friday, 8am 8pm; Saturday, 9am to 5pm; Sunday, 10am to 4pm).

Voyage Transatlantic With Hurtigruten

Ever wondered what life was really like out on the ocean wave? Want to take a leisurely journey by ship from continent to continent? Hurtigruten is now offering guests the chance to do just this and enjoy a completely different experience on board one of its Transatlantic voyages.

Expedition ship MS Fram will start her winter repositioning journey from Las Palmas in the Canary Islands to Buenos Aires on October 14 in order to begin sailing around Antarctica. She will then return again on March 12, ready to sail around Europe next summer, before making her way back across the Atlantic once again on October 18.

During these special transatlantic crossings, guests can enjoy a very different way of life. The atmosphere on board is informal and relaxed as the ship’s crew cast their uniform life aside and slow down their pace of work. The time is used to get the ship ready for the new season and crew members carry out basic maintenance, while at the same time caring for the guests enjoying this transatlantic voyage as professionally and attentively as any other.

There are fewer guests on board compared to other Hurtigruten voyages and that alone makes the crossing unforgettable. Guests spend a lot of time on deck, enjoying the sun or watching the ocean as it stretches from horizon to horizon. Fram is equipped with a sauna, whirlpool and fitness room and guests and crew mingle in a relaxed atmosphere. The crossings also include the famous Equator Baptism by King Neptune and his wife for those crossing the Equator for the first time, as well as barbecues on deck.

The 17-day transatlantic voyage is priced from £1,615pp with full board on the ship, based on two sharing. Flights are extra.
