Fred Olsen's Solo Specials

We often highlight the relative plight of solo travellers in the cruise world, with single supplements sometimes as much as 200% of the regular fare for two people in a cabin.

But Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines work hard to be attractive to solo guests, and have just introduced a ‘no single supplement’ on certain grades of twin cabins for sole occupancy, on a selection of 2014/15 cruises. These special ‘no single supplement’ deals, which came into effect this month, mean that a solo guest, occupying a twin cabin, will pay the same per person rate as a couple, on applicable cruises.

Once on board, solo travellers will find exclusive gatherings for them to get to know each other, and staff on board will seat them together for dinner, and arrange companions for solo travellers when going ashore, if required. There are also Gentleman Hosts and Dance Couples to provide dancing partners for solo guests. The relatively small size of Fred. Olsen’s four ships and the relaxed and friendly atmosphere on board also make their cruises especially attractive for those travelling alone.

Saga's Spellbinding Norway

It's the final day of our fabulous Cruise Week with Saga Cruises, sailing their world and enjoying their cruise style and destinations. To conclude, we have a final journey to epic, beautiful Norway...

We make no bones about it - Norway is one of the most amazing countries to visit, especially by cruise ship, and this voyage just about has the lot.

The cruise then calls in at Flam deep in the Aurlandsfjord, surrounded by picturesque scenery of meadows, orchards and imposing mountains. Here, guests can enjoy a choice of several excursions, including include a ride on the Flåm Railway - one of the most dramatic train journeys in Europe.

Next up, the impossibly pretty village of Olden stands at the end of the beautiful Nordfjord,

with its quaint wooden homes, miles of forest and simple way of life. You can visit the Briksdal Glacier (right) on a guided hike or the Norwegian Glacier Centre, where you can learn about how glaciers are formed.

Finally, the Sapphire calls into the quintessential Norwegian port, Bergen. Surrounded by mountains and fjords, the waterside city has one of the most spectacular settings in all of Scandinavia and is a guaranteed hit with passengers. There has been a settlement here since Medieval times and the colourful waterfront buildings of the Hanseatic Wharf, known as the Bryggen, are testament to its fascinating history.

Saga Opera in the Fjords

Day 7 with Fred Olsen to Norway

Our man Steve Newman continues his classic Norwegian cruise journey with Fred Olsen Cruise Lines...

Well, the clear blue skies of the last two days are no longer with us. Showery today, but it didn’t detract at all from another marvellous day. Docking at Stavanger we had breakfast followed by a short walk to board the fast boat that was to take us on a tour of the archipelago around Stavanger and the beautiful Lysefjord.

The fjord has a cliff wall  rising some 300ft out of the waters, which we followed for  two miles, pausing directly under a fascinating waterfall that soaked us even more than the rain had managed to do  so far. Wild goats came down to look at us and we stopped at a cabin to consume hot coffee plus waffles, cream and strawberry jam.

After lunch on the ship, we explored old Stavanger with its white boarded houses, fantastic gardens and cobbled streets. Extremely quaint and dating from the 17th-19th centuries, they are still lived in today and made for a fascinating tour before we returned to the ship to sail at 4.30pm for Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands. Oh, and the sun is back!

Fred Olsen's Summer Sale

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has just launched a special selection of cruises for summer 2012, offering great savings on brochure prices. There are sailings from a range of regional UK ports, to destinations including the Norwegian fjords, the Baltic, the Arctic, Mediterranean and the Canary Islands, as well as several mini=cruises. 

All offer exceptional value for money, with prices starting from £64 per person per night, and savings on brochure prices of up to £1,500 per cabin. Guests booking two or more cabins at the same time may also be eligible for an extra saving of 10% on the ‘Special-saver’ price.

Departure ports include Dover, Southampton, Portsmouth, Newcastle, Greenock (Glasgow) and Rosyth (Edinburgh), with the PortLink coach service available from 42 pick up points nationwide. Some sample cruises include :
 

• Black Watch ‘Majestic Fjords’ cruise, a seven-night cruise from Dover to the Norwegian fjords, on September 2, with ports including Bergen, Stavanger, Flam and Eidfjord. Prices start from £629 per person, based on two adults sharing an inside, twin cabin (brochure price £819). 
• Boudicca ‘Waterfalls & Volcanoes’ cruise, a 10-night cruise to Iceland from Rosyth on July 31 that includes an overnight stay in Reykjavik, the Icelandic capital, and well as a call into the Faroe Islands. Prices start from £849 per person, reduced from £1,169, saving £320 per person.
• Balmoral’s ‘Portugal & Spain with Barcelona’ cruise, a 14-night cruise from Southampton on  August 11, with ports that include Gibraltar and Lisbon as well as vibrant Barcelona. Prices start from £1,079 per person, formerly £1,589.
• Black Watch mini cruise, a three-night cruise departing from Dover on September 9 and calling at Rouen (France) for an overnight stay. Prices start from £229 per person (formerly £339).

All prices are per person, based on two adults sharing an inside, twin cabin, Grade ‘I’ and include all meals and entertainment on board and port taxes.

Fred. Olsen's Diamond Jubilee Specials

As a British cruise line attracting predominantly British guests, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines plans to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in typical patriotic style, with special ‘red, white and blue’ menus, entertainment, and much more aboard all four ships in its fleet over the Jubilee Weekend, 2nd–5th June.

Cruise guests will be invited to get into the Street Party spirit with plenty of Union Flags and bunting, and will have the chance to play traditional games and join in a rousing British sing-along. There will be specially-themed menus, and each ship with serve a Jubilee Cocktail in the bars created by the onboard ‘mixologists’. Entertainment will focus on ‘British Nights’ with variety shows, and quizzes with a British theme. Raffles will also be held on board, to raise money for Fred. Olsen’s charity partner, the RNLI – a charity of which Her Majesty the Queen is Patron. Plans also include a Grand Tea Dance with complimentary sherry and cakes, as well as a prize for the best cake.

Guests visiting the beauty salon can expect to be offered special pampering packages, to make them Feel Like a Queen for the Day. In the public lounges, TV coverage of the Jubilee events will be screened, so those away from home will not miss any of the action. The ships will be at different locations around the world during Jubilee weekend:

Balmoral will be in the Norwegian fjords, on an eight-night cruise departing from Southampton on May 29. The cruise visits Bergen, Flåm, Olden, Eidfjord and Stavanger, and returns to Southampton. Prices start from £949 per person, based on two adults sharing an inside twin cabin, Grade ‘H’.

Boudicca will be on a cruise to the Adriatic, departing from Greenock (Glasgow) on May 20. This 21-night cruise calls at Gibraltar, Valletta (Malta), Sibenik (Croatia), Venice (Italy), Koper (Slovenia), Ancona (Italy), Dubrovnik (Croatia), Motril (Spain), and returns to Greenock. The cruise has an additional attraction of a theme of ‘Flavours of the Adriatic’ through the award-winning onboard enrichment programme, Vistas. Prices start from £2,269 per person, based on two adults sharing an outside twin cabin, Grade ‘E’.

Braemar will be in the Baltic during the Jubilee weekend, on a 14-night cruise departing from Dover on May 31. This cruise will call at Ijmuiden (for tours to Amsterdam), Rønne (Bornholm, Denmark), Visby (Gotland, Sweden), St. Petersburg (Russia, overnight), Tallinn (Estonia), Stockholm (also for an overnight stay), and Aalborg (Denmark), before returning to Dover. Prices start from £1,199 per person, based on two adults sharing an inside twin cabin, Grade ’I’.

Finally, Black Watch will spend the Jubilee weekend in the Eastern Mediterranean, on a 23-night cruise from Dover, departing on May 19. This cruise calls at Cadiz (Spain), Gibraltar, Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy), Corfu (Greece), Katakolon (Greece), Alexandria (Egypt), Valletta (Malta), Algiers (Algeria), Tangier (Morocco), Lisbon (Portugal), and returns to Dover. There is a Vistas theme on this cruise of ‘Ancient Mythology’, and prices start from £2,269 per person, based on two adults sharing an outside twin cabin, Grade ‘E’.

Cunard's March Cabin Upgrade Offers

Cunard have a series of offers with outstanding value for money this month to sample their classic ocean liner travel.

Destinations include a short break where you can join Queen Victoria on May 5 or Queen Mary 2 on November 16 for a four-night long weekend for an introduction to Cunard’s legendary lifestyle. Sail from Southampton and call at Zeebrugge (for Bruges) and Le Havre (for Paris) before returning home. On offer are outside stateroom fares at inside prices, starting from just £399 per person for Queen Victoria and £499 on QM2.

Queen Victoria’s Mediterranean 16-night voyage on October 3 starts from and returns back to Southampton visiting Cadiz, Malaga, Split, Corfu, Venice and Dubrovnik. Again, outside stateroom fares at inside prices are on offer from £1,499 per person and Princess Grill fares at deluxe balcony prices from £2,399.

Queen Elizabeth sails from Southampton on July 6 and August 7 for a seven-night voyage along Norway’s scenic coastline, calling at Stavanger, Skjolden, Geiranger and Bergen. A balcony stateroom is the perfect complement to this stunning landscape, with balcony fares now at outside stateroom prices, starting at £1,069 per person.

The Queen Mary 2 then departs Southampton on August 10 for an 11-night voyage to the Baltic cities, including Hamburg, Oslo, Copenhagen, Gothenburg and Stavanger. Outside stateroom fares for the cost of an inside room are now available in March from £1,549 per person.
