Saga's Spellbinding Norway

It's the final day of our fabulous Cruise Week with Saga Cruises, sailing their world and enjoying their cruise style and destinations. To conclude, we have a final journey to epic, beautiful Norway...

We make no bones about it - Norway is one of the most amazing countries to visit, especially by cruise ship, and this voyage just about has the lot.

Set sail on Saga Sapphire from Dover in July and you can visit quaint villages, historic ports and experience the UNESCO-protected landscape of Norway’s stunning fjords. In the evenings, guests can also get into the 1960s groove with the Steve Love Band and, to continue the theme, a 60s culture speaker will also be on board to bring back memories of the ‘Make love, not war’ era.

And then there are the ports. Old Stavanger (above left) is characterised by white-boarded houses, fantastic gardens and cobbled streets. Extremely quaint and dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, these houses are still lived in today and make for a fascinating tour. You can also explore the beautiful Lysefjord, where the cliff walls rise more than 300ft out of the still, blue waters for a distance of more than two miles.

The cruise then calls in at Flam deep in the Aurlandsfjord, surrounded by picturesque scenery of meadows, orchards and imposing mountains. Here, guests can enjoy a choice of several excursions, including include a ride on the Flåm Railway - one of the most dramatic train journeys in Europe.

Next up, the impossibly pretty village of Olden stands at the end of the beautiful Nordfjord,
with its quaint wooden homes, miles of forest and simple way of life. You can visit the Briksdal Glacier (right) on a guided hike or the Norwegian Glacier Centre, where you can learn about how glaciers are formed.

Finally, the Sapphire calls into the quintessential Norwegian port, Bergen. Surrounded by mountains and fjords, the waterside city has one of the most spectacular settings in all of Scandinavia and is a guaranteed hit with passengers. There has been a settlement here since Medieval times and the colourful waterfront buildings of the Hanseatic Wharf, known as the Bryggen, are testament to its fascinating history.

Saga's 7-night Spellbinding Norway voyage costs from £909 per person, departing Dover on July 24 and calling at Stavanger, Flam, Olden and Bergen.

It's Saga Week On World of Cruising!

By Editor Simon Veness

Get ready for a full week of Saga Cruises here at World of Cruising this week, with a whole range of stories, insight and special offers from Britain's classic cruise line.

Starting tomorrow (Feb 11), we will have a new story each day on an aspect of the Dover-based company, who operate two ships - Saga Pearl II and Saga Sapphire - on a series of extensive voyages that appeal to the serious cruiser.

Taking it day by day, we will devote our new-look main website - www.worldofcruising.co.uk - to the full Saga story, with an in-depth look at what they do and a full week's worth of special offers, with follow-up stories here at Time Spent At Sea and our Twitter account, @WorldofCruising.

Both Saga ships offer a contrasting experience and a tempting programme of voyages, varying from 3 days to extended 20 and 30-day grand voyages to the Black Sea, Caribbean and further afield, with most setting sail from Dover but many from Southampton as well. There are themed cruises and Christmas cruises, plus special guests like Dame Stella Rimington (ex-MI5) and Dr Ann Birchall of the Antiques Roadshow and a 100th anniversary commemoration of the Gallipoli campaign in April 2015.

Intimate and casual, the 18,591-ton Saga Pearl II (left) is small enough to go where many big ships can't and features more off-the-beaten-track ports of call as a result, but still with a full array of amenities and facilities on board, including excellent dining, a choice of bars and lounges, plus an indoor pool, sauna and the latest fitness equipment.

The 37,301-ton Saga Sapphire (below) is the former five-star Europa of stylish Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, fully renovated and redesigned internally for British guests and maximum comfort, with a rather more contemporary style but still carrying only a maximum of 720 passengers. The vessel boasts spacious cabins, a state-of-the-art Spa, full promenade deck, three dining venues and a great range of public rooms, including the classic Britannia Lounge for afternoon tea.

All Saga dining is fully open seating (although there are fixed-seating tables if you prefer),
meaning you can dine when you like with whom you like, and it all comes with a friendly, efficient service that marks Saga out as one of the true individuals in the cruise world today. All cruises also feature a specialist lecture programme into the areas and ports visited by the ships, with expert guests to add real depth to the voyage.

Other Saga extras include:
  • Door-to-door chauffeur service
  • Travel insurance and additional cancellation cover
  • All onboard gratuities
  • 24 hour room service
  • Free shuttle bus to take you to the nearest town centre
  • Porterage of luggage
Now, be sure to tune in to Time Spent At Sea every day this coming week for more great news and offers on Saga cruises, and see more on our main website. And get ready to set sail!

More info: call 0800 096 0074 or visit http://travel.saga.co.uk/holidays/ocean-cruises.aspx.

American Queen Calls To British Cruisers

One of the most intriguing 'newcomers' to the Telegraph Cruise Show last weekend was the UK sales launch of the American Queen steamboat.

The classic vessel, with its authentic steam-powered paddlewheel, is the largest riverboat in the world and travels the Mississippi River and its tributaries, and it is now on sale to British customers for the first time through the booking agency of Light Blue Travel.

The American Queen towers six decks high and is longer than a football field; it features broad shaded decks and an abundance of filigree, fretwork, antique furniture, stained glass and mahogany panelling with a choice of wonderful accommodation, including staterooms and suites with genuine verandas.

A choice of itineraries take passengers back to a slower pace of life on seven-night themed voyages that include the Civil War, Mardi Gras, Blues & Barbecue, Dixie Fest, Southern Culture, Louisiana History and Culture, Gardens of the River, The Great Steamboat Era and even an Elvis Presley tribute cruise, which includes a visit to Graceland (Priscilla Presley is the riverboat’s Godmother). The vessel’s main ports of embark and disembarkation are New Orleans, Memphis, St Louis, St Paul, Pittsburgh and Chattanooga.

Sales manager Graham Clubb explained: “We’ve already had an enthusiastically received UK travel trade launch for the American Queen and the Telegraph Cruise Show is the perfect launchpad to the consumer – we couldn’t ask for a better audience.

"The American Queen is like no other river ship - she brings a unique perspective on America's history, culture and landscapes through the heartland of America – it’s all very Mark Twain/Gone with the Wind! She is the largest riverboat in the world and a marvel of American engineering with a giant paddlewheel, a sight to behold.”

Seven nights on the American Queen start from £2,495 per person inclusive of scheduled flights from London, transfers in the US, full board, excursions, entertainment on board, port charges and one night pre-cruise in a hotel.

More info: email sales@lightbluetravel.co.uk or call 01223 568904.

Have you subscribed to World of Cruising magazine yet? We have a very special, limited-time offer to save 50% off a full year's subscription, which includes six issues PLUS our new year-end Cruise Directory. That means a year's worth of Europe's leading cruise publication will be only £15. Check out the special rate on this link!

Summer Sizzlers From Ponant

Leading French cruise line and five-star expedition specialist Compagnie du Ponant has launched its Summer 2014 collection aboard its three elegant, intimate yacht-style cruisers, Le Boreal, L'Austral and Le Soleal (all with just 132 staterooms & suites), and the majestic three-masted yacht Le Ponant ( with only 32 staterooms).

From April to October 2014, they will be cruising in the Great Arctic North and Canada, Northern Europe and the Baltic, and the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, offering a wide range of unusual itineraries and ports of call. Each of the luxury yachts offers spacious suites, impeccable service and excellent food and wine – plus their small size allows them to reach destinations larger ships cannot. Passengers will also sail in the company of experts and historians as guides and lecturers who are passionate about their subjects.

Be it a five-star expedition to the Arctic, coast to coast cruising in the Mediterranean or themed cruises, Ponant offers much more than just a cruise: this is travel as it used to be in the golden age of the grand voyage.

NEW ITINERARIES

Spitsbergen & Iceland: Leaving from Longyearbyen, L’Austral sets sail for the iridescent ice fields of Spitsbergen where Zodiacs will take passengers as close as possible to polar landscapes, the ice floe, glaciers and icebergs. The ship then heads for Iceland on a new itinerary from Grimsey Island, along the coast and south as far as Reykjavík.

Alaska to Kamchatka: From Nome in Alaska, L’Austral heads for the wilderness of Kamtchatka in the Russian Far East. This volcanic region is spectacularly beautiful and home to extraordinary wildlife. One of the highlights is the Valley of Geysers, 40 volcanoes in the Kronotsky Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Uzon Caldera with its extraordinary contrasts and colours – from the intense blue of the lake and streams, suspensions of milky sulphur and the emerald green of the algae. New for 2014 is the possibility to begin the cruise with a short stay in Seattle.

From the Atlantic To The North Sea: Departing from Bordeaux, Le Boreal heads north. After calls at Belle-Île-en-Mer and London, passengers will enjoy Amsterdam’s unique ambiance, Sylt Island in the heart of the Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the ecological energy-conscious city of Hamburg and the luminosity of Copenhagen.

Norwegian Fjords: from Copenhagen, L’Austral will explore nature’s wonders along the coast of Norway, whose spectacular fjords have nearly all earned the UNESCO World Heritage site status. The Briksdal and Svartisen glaciers, the Jostedalsbreen Glacier National Park, Geiranger Fjord and the Viking islands of Giske and Godoy all feature on the itinerary of this exceptional cruise.

The Azores: Bathed in sunshine year-round, the Azores islands boast a rich natural, cultural and architectural heritage. Passengers on Le Boreal will begin their cruise on the main island, São Miguel, before heading for stunning Pico where vines are slowly reclaiming the slopes of the Ponta do Pico volcano. A particularly symbolic port of call for transatlantic sailors is Horta on Faial Island which has an unusually cosmopolitan atmosphere. On Terceira Island, Angra do Heroismo boasts a military heritage worthy of its UNESCO World Heritage site status. The last port of call will be Santa Maria Island, where the tranquil landscape is dotted with beaches, vineyards and white villages.

Gourmet Cruise: From Lisbon to Bordeaux, Le Boreal transforms this voyage into an exceptional epicurean encounter. In a programme created by French magazine Cuisine et Vins de France, passengers will celebrate the delights of gourmet cuisine in the company of Michelin-starred Chefs and renowned Sommeliers, including celebrity head-chef Hélène Darroze, Jean Sulpice, Nicolas Magie, Philippe Faure-Brac and Olivier Dauga. Tastings, culinary workshops and conferences will be on the menu between calls into Porto, Viana do Castelo, Vigo, La Coruna, Bilbao, Le Verdon and Bordeaux.

Musical Cruise: Le Soleal invites music-lovers to embark on this fabulous voyage from Venice to Athens. Directed by Alain Duault and produced in partnership with France’s Radio Classique, this festival at sea welcomes some outstanding musicians. They will perform several concerts at some of the places visited: Zadar and Dubrovnik in Croatia, Kotor Fjord in Montenegro, Otranto in Italy, the legendary Olympia site and the ruins of Mycenae in Greece.

Jazz Cruise: For this new itinerary, Le Soleal sets sail from Istanbul to France via Dikili near the Pergamum site in Turkey, Katakolon near the Olympia site in Greece, Taormina and Palermo in Sicily, and Ajaccio in Corsica. Aboard, Christian Morin and his quintet will perform two jazz concerts of 40s music in a tribute to Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman.

Meet The Vikings With Hurtigruten!

The British Museum is planning a major Viking exhibition in 2014, to ask the eternal question: were they a people hell bent on barbaric raiding and pillaging, or were they forward-thinking philanthropic tradesmen and explorers?

But if you want to visit their homeland to find out more, Hurtigruten’s 12-day ‘Voyage of the Vikings’ in September next year will be the ideal opportunity as it will be lead by British Museum curator and Viking expert, Gareth Williams - the lead curator of the forthcoming exhibition - who will give lectures on-board as well as accompany tours.

The voyage is a round trip from Bergen to Kirkenes, with numerous relevant stops en-route. A Viking Feast is included, of course, where passengers will join the chieftain and his wife in a reconstruction of the largest Viking longhouse ever discovered and will be regaled with stories while enjoying traditional Viking food and drink. Numerous other excursions are also available.

For those who want to truly immerse themselves in Viking heritage, there is also an opportunity to extend your stay to include a visit to Oslo, where you can visit the Viking Museum, home to genuine relics of the Viking age, including an original long boat.
The 12-day voyage departs on September 9, 2014, and costs from £2,282 per person including flights, cabin on a full board basis and airport transfers.

This unique trip features in Hurtigruten’s new Norway brochure for 2014, which is now on sale. A number of new excursions and additional year-round UK flight charters have also been included for the first time. UK Charters were previously not offered in the summer.

Early booking discounts are also available, with up to 25% off selected voyages made by October 31 (subject to availability). Customers booking a ‘Classic Voyage’ before the end of October, for travel in April or August 2014, will also receive £120 onboard credit.

The overall lead-in price for the 2014 programme is £811 per person for the five night Classic Voyage South on a full board basis (excluding flights, but including early booking offer).

Take In An Eclipse With Fred Olsen

A total solar eclipse is one of the most awe-inspiring natural spectacles in the world - and one of the most difficult to view. It occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, entirely obscuring the Sun and blocking all direct sunlight, turning daylight into  darkness. A sensational full eclipse is due in March 2015, and the great news for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ fans is that its 880-guest cruise ship Boudicca will be at the precise co-ordinates at this time to allow guests one of the best chances of viewing it from anywhere on the planet. The 15-night ‘Solar Eclipse Cruise’ departs on March 9, 2015, and is now on sale.

The voyage departs from Southampton and calls at several attractive Norwegian ports: pretty Art Nouveau Ǻlesund, Tromsø, inside the Arctic Circle, sometimes described as ‘The Paris of the Arctic’; Alta (Finnmark), home for centuries to the Sami people and their herds of reindeer; and Leknes, in the remote and beautiful Lofoten Islands.

Boudicca then spends a day at sea on March 20, en route to the Faroe Islands and is positioned at the best-suggested co-ordinates – 64.26.3N, 6.39.0W – for guests to make the most of viewing the extraordinary total eclipse from the ship. The final port of call is Runavik on the Faroes, before Boudicca returns to Southampton

Prices for this fascinating ex-UK cruise start from £1,699 per person, based on two adults sharing an inside, twin cabin Grade ‘I’, and include accommodation, all meals and entertainment on board, and port taxes. There is an additional bonus of up to £250 free onboard spending credit per cabin, making this cruise unbeatable value for money.

For bookings, follow this link to The Cruise Line, the UK's cruise-agent specialists.

A Nordic Summer Dream

The Hapag-Lloyd Cruises ship Europa sets sail in June and July for the far north of Scandinavia - and a real Nordic dream of a summer cruise.

The Arctic will provide the backdrop for the fifth “Stella Maris” singing competition, in which eight talented young singers from famous opera houses will vie for glory on the ship in the Lieder, opera and oratorio categories. Along the way, musical and scenic highlights galore await guests as the ship sails from Hamburg to Iceland through the fjords of Norway and on to Spitsbergen. There will also be opportunities to take off in a manoeuvrable Zodiac to discover the region north of the Arctic Circle during the hours between the performances.

The various concerts accompanying the “Stella Maris” competition will showcase the classical singing skills of a host of talented young artists. For the fifth time, Europa will be transformed into a festival stage, under the artistic leadership of chamber singer and tenor Michael Schade. The audience will play an active part in the musical event, choosing the winner, who can look forward to a 15,000 euro prize courtesy of Hapag-Lloyd cruises.

A Nordic Summer Dream
After setting sail from Hamburg on June 30, the ship will head past Iceland up towards Spitsbergen and then spend three days along Norway’s “Cold Coast”. Beatlemania With Fred Olsen

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines are well-known for their great choice of convenient regional UK departure ports – no fewer than nine in 2013 – and also for offering a wide selection of mini-cruises. One of these popular sailings, ideal for those who are ‘new to cruising’ and would like an introductory taste of life at sea, is Boudicca’s ‘Liverpool & Dublin Discovery’, a three-night mini-cruise departing from Greenock (Glasgow) on July 14, which also boasts live entertainment from Beatles tribute band Beatlemania.

This ‘Fab Four’ are recognised as one of the UK’s leading tribute bands, and have played to ecstatic audiences all over the world, with many TV and theatre appearances to their name. Formed in the 1990s, Beatlemania have appeared alongside many original bands from the 1960s, including The Merseybeats, The Hollies and The Searchers, and their celebrity clients include David and Victoria Beckham and Sir Richard Branson. Their repertoire covers music from all stages of The Beatles’ career, from the early ‘mop top’ days, right through to Sergeant Pepper and The White Album, with the group changing their outfits to match the music.

This Boudicca mini-break starts with a visit to lively Dublin, for an overnight stay. This is one of the most popular ports, with wonderful sightseeing, great bars, cafés and restaurants, and the overnight stay gives guests plenty of time to sample the famous Irish ‘craic’. As well as its landscaped parks and rich Georgian heritage, Dublin has personality; bursting with culture, landmarks such as the Old Parliament House, Trinity College, Dublin Castle and Christchurch Cathedral, all of which are a must-see. Of course, no visit would be complete without a trip to the Guinness Brewery for a drop of the ‘black stuff’, or a quick ‘snifter’ at the Jameson Distillery! For lovers of the great outdoors, there is also the option to take a hike through the stunning scenery of the Wicklow Mountains.

The next and final stop is Liverpool, a new port for Fred. Olsen’s 2013/14 season, where the line is making a welcome return. Named as the 2008 European Capital of Culture, Liverpool is packed with museums and art galleries. Its historic waterfront – featuring the iconic Liver Building – was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, proving that this warm and welcoming City is more than just the birthplace of The Beatles.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines have a real treat in store for fans of classical music this summer as Boudicca’s 14-night ‘Scandinavia and St. Petersburg’ cruise combines stunning Baltic ports with a theme of Classical Music, through its award-winning onboard enrichment programme, Vistas. The highlight of this cultural cruise will be live performances by The OperaBabes, making their third appearance with Fred. Olsen, who are set to electrify audiences with Puccini’s aria ‘O mio babbino caro’, made famous by Maria Callas, amongst their repertoire.

As part of the Music theme, guests can enjoy fascinating talks, as well as star quality live entertainment. The OperaBabes – Rebecca Knight, soprano, and Karen England, mezzo soprano – will join this cruise in Copenhagen on August 11. Boudicca departs from Liverpool on July 31, calling first at Kristiansand in Norway. Founded by King Christian IV in the 17th Century, it boasts some of Norway’s finest beaches. Moving further east, the ship then calls into Tallinn, the lovely capital of Estonia, with its domed churches and cobbled streets, one of the most popular ports in the region and always a delight to visit.

A major highlight of the cruise is the magnificent city of St. Petersburg, Russia’s most European city and a treasure trove of fine art and architecture. There is an overnight stay here and guests can choose an optional tour to visit the ballet or enjoy a classical music performance. The next port is Finland’s attractive and cosmopolitan capital, Helsinki, created by the czars as a ‘miniature’ St. Petersburg. On the return voyage, the final port of call is another capital – Copenhagen in Denmark – which has so much to offer; from the delightful Tivoli Gardens to the charming Little Mermaid statue and the colourful buildings of the former sailors' district, Nyhavn, there really is something for everyone. Two relaxing days at sea bring Boudicca back to Liverpool.
