Hurtigruten promise a free second cruise if the Northern Lights don't come out to play
The Northern Lights are a natural spectacle that everyone wants to see, but they can prove elusive, as Joanne Lumley discovered when she set out to make a TV documentary about them.
The 12 day Classic Round Voyage hugs the Norwegian coastline from Bergen up to Kirkenes, where it turns around and starts its journey south. Fares start from £999 per person in an inside cabin, on full board (based on two sharing), departing on a wide choice of dates in November and December 2014. Flight and transfer packages start from £330 per person.

Marco Polo, The Cape Crusader
The ship is also unique, as the Marco Polo has been sailing from the UK for almost 20 years and remains one of the most beloved classic vessels anywhere. She will depart from Newcastle for this eventful cruise, for 14 nights, with prices from £1,209pp.
From the Port of Tyne, Marco Polo heads straight for Norway’s spectacular coastline, taking passengers high above the Arctic Circle to experience the thrill of ‘White Nights’ in the Land of the Midnight Sun. Along the way, the voyage will visit picturesque villages and isolated communities, enjoy splendid fjord scenery and dramatic landscapes.
The Lofoten Islands should, perhaps, be called ‘not often’ as not many ships include this area and its remarkable terrain. From Gravdal, visitors can explore the dramatic village-dotted landscape and the traditional red ‘rorbuer’ waterside cabin-style houses.
This cruise also visits Kirkenes, Murmansk and the North Cape.
Oh, and don't miss out on our feature on Norway, the adventure-cruise way, in the next edition of World of Cruising, which will tell you even more about this fascinating country. The new issue will be out in January.

Reach The Heart Of Lapland With Hurtigruten
The 12-day tour from March 25 to April 5 combines a Hurtigruten voyage on MS Midnatsol along Norway’s wintery fjord coast with a tour into the interior of Finnmark, the northernmost province of Norway and home to the Norwegian Sami. Highlights include a visit to an Igloo hotel, opportunities to meet the local Sami people and a Northern Lights tour.
The voyage will start in Bergen, the Hanseatic city steeped in tradition, and follows up with a visit to the old royal city of Trondheim, the picturesque Lofoten archipelago and the “Arctic capital” of Tromsø, and on to the port of Alta, the largest city in Finnmark. Weather conditions allowing, the ship will travel off the normal Hurtigruten course around the imposing North Cape Plateau, the northernmost point in Europe.
Passengers will then disembark for a two day land tour of the region. Highlights include a visit to the Alta Museum and its petroglyphs - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - a trip to the impressive Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, a reindeer stew lunch by the open fire on cosy reindeer skins in a traditional Sami tent and a concert by local performers.
The Finnmark region is one of the best places to observe the spectacular Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis. The land-based part of the trip ends with a journey to a winter camp far away from any interfering light sources to maximise chances of seeing this magnificent spectacle.
At the end of the local tour, guests will be transferred back to Alta, from where MS Midnatsol sets off on its southward journey to Bergen.
The trip costs from £1,855 per person for the 12-day trip (based on 2 sharing). Flights are available for an additional £450 per person.
More info: call 0844 448 7601 or visit www.hurtigruten.co.uk.

Norway's Autumn Magic With Hurtigruten
Now, for the first time, guests travelling with Hurtigruten in September and October can enjoy the journey under a new ‘Autumn Gold’ theme, celebrating all the best things about this colourful season. This includes sailing into a new fjord, a range of new shore excursions, musical treats and new seasonal delicacies on-board.
A key highlight of this new theme will be the ships' journey into Hjørundfjord, considered one of Norway’s most spectacular fjords. For 35km, the Hjørundfjord cuts into the alpine mountains and offers the chance to get far away from the tourist bustle, taking guests past steep rock walls, green meadows, mountain farms and secluded villages.
Food will also play an important role, with the onboard menu being tailored to the seasonal delicacies of the regions the ships visit, while there will also be tastings of autumn foods such as cloudberries and reindeer. Each night, guests can expect local specialities; for example, in Tromsø there will be leg of lamb with grilled autumn root veg and, in Kirkenes, baked King Crab and pumpkin puree followed by rump steam of reindeer with autumn mushrooms and carrots glazed in rosemary.

Day 7 with Fred Olsen to Norway
The fjord has a cliff wall rising some 300ft out of the waters, which we followed for two miles, pausing directly under a fascinating waterfall that soaked us even more than the rain had managed to do so far. Wild goats came down to look at us and we stopped at a cabin to consume hot coffee plus waffles, cream and strawberry jam.

Day 6 to Norway with Fred Olsen
We returned to the ship by a small ferry - an experience in itself as a flock of sheep kept us company on the short trip across! Not due to sail for a couple of hours as we neared the ship, I could swear I heard the Jacuzzis on the outside deck bubbling!
See you tomorrow...

Day 5 of Off to Norway with Fred Olsen
The jewel in the crown, though, is the ancient row of Hanseatic League warehouses with their brightly coloured frontages. Behind them, spreading eastwards bounded by the Ovregaten, is the Bryggen district full of tiny boarded houses and ancient alleyways, antique bric-a-brac shops, artists galleries, jewellery makers and a host of small bars overflowing on to the pavements.
It was 20C today so, when we got back to the ship, we found the jacuzzis and pool in full use. It seemed rude not to join in.

Day Four to Norway with Fred Olsen
We also took in the famous fish market and the harbour but, as we had decided to take the excursion tomorrow around the city, we went back to the ship for lunch.
We watched the fireworks in the evening from the Sun Deck and they were superb, as was our meal. Once again, the quality of the meal, and the wines to go with it, were spot on. Definitely a recurring theme!

Day 3 with Fred Olsen to Norway
Yesterday, we were invited to the “Traditional English White Glove Afternoon Tea” held in the Observatory Lounge. Scones, cream, jam, pastries, mini chocolate éclairs, sandwiches and tartlets, plus chilled champagne with a choice of four teas. The whole affair was rounded off by the waiters in their impeccably smart outfits.
Today is Norway’s National Day, so we are looking forward to the parades and banners in the city. Tell you all about it tomorrow!
